My column: During construction, half of the lanes at Portage and Main were closed. After a few weeks, congestion dissipated & traffic ran normally. A lesson that might allow us to reduce the width of the intersection and add new public space in the future. winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analys…

The beauty of this strip mall in Edmonton that tried to create a cartoon walkable Dutch street on its facade is that a block away there’s an awesome public art sculpture designed as a monument to North America’s obsession with car culture. incandescentcloud.com/2018/08/30/car…
Can’t stop thinking about the big box store that uses a facade to present itself as a fine-grained, dense, mixed-use street
This video of Winnipeg Jet Gabe Vilardi explaining that NHL players dislike Winnipeg because of its downtown is a harsh reality. Cities competing for business investment, tourism and growth are judged by their downtowns.
Jets winger Gabriel Vilardi discussing the perception vs reality of Winnipeg. Gives insight as a former visiting player vs now. Bottom line focus for him is on becoming the best player he can be and the opportunity to win in Manitoba. Full chat: illegalcurve.com/media-availabi…

Yeah. It’s cool and all, but you should see how wide the parking stalls are at the Costco where I live.

“Sometimes we're on a sidewalk. Sometimes we're in a lane with cars Sometimes we're in a bus lane. Sometimes we're on a shared use path Sometimes we're rolling stop signs and going contraflow on a 1-way street.” I do all of these every day on my way to work, almost in that order
People who rant & rage about rules of the road for cyclists don't understand how normies ride bikes. Sometimes we're on a sidewalk. Sometimes we're in a lane with cars. Sometimes we're in a bus lane. Sometimes we're on a shared use path. Sometimes we're rolling stop signs and…
Two of my favourite pieces of European design. A Porsche 356 Speedster, the most beautiful car ever built, and a Dutch bike, the most beautiful bicycle ever built. Sadly, mine is the less expensive one.

Without fanfare, the City of Winnipeg has been on an absolute tree planting blitz over the last few weeks. Almost every boulevard in every mature neighbourhood has been replanted.

Really exciting to see Graham Avenue being transformed into Winnipeg’s first permanent pedestrian street. @CoolStreetsWPG is painting the pavement. Planters, furniture and art is being installed - including a giant fan that can be pedaled to cool people off.

This is awesome!!! CoPilot Co. built a little video game that’s lets you walk across Portage and Main! Try it out. lcc-viewer.xgrids.com/pub/dbdjsd-por…

I was in the newspaper today. A nice piece about Portage and Main opening to pedestrians after 46 years of being closed. A new day for Winnipeg. winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/2…
As more people experience standing at Portage and Main, I can see a future concern being the number of semi-trailers that rumble through the intersection. The heart of downtown should not be the fastest route for the trucking industry to cross the city.

Seemed like a missed opportunity to have the first official crossing of Portage and Main be a few city councillors instead of the thousand people in the crowd excited to be part of it. A mob crossing would have been a great visual and statement. Oh well.
