Thanks to @just_security for giving me the space to see the bigger picture here on press freedom. As we get sucked into new rabbit holes with breaking news, it gets hard to keep sight of the overall stakes --- which are enormous justsecurity.org/107377/trump-c…
1/2 The erosion of US #PressFreedom is reported piecemeal, making it hard to grasp the full extent of the threat now in play. @bechamilton puts it together for the big picture: (link in 2/2)
Excellent post - well worth reading for those still working their way through the lengthy opinion

Important: [the] presiding judge ... added that, as Assad was no longer president ... "new arrest warrants can have been, or can be, issued against him" and as such the investigation into the case could continue." No Head of State immunity going forward. Reissue the warrants.

Handwritten hate mail, delivered by post, complete with return address, is a new development in my life.
With a 500-page judgment, there's still plenty left for others to dig into, but we covered a fair bit of ground for one podcast. A treat, as always, to chat with @tomdannenbaum & @rgoodlaw @just_security
It was a privilege to join @bechamilton and Ryan Goodman on the Just Security Podcast to discuss today’s landmark European Court of Human Rights judgment on Russia’s human rights violations in Ukraine justsecurity.org/116673/unpacki…
My government is imposing sanctions on a UN mandate holder for doing her job, including calling on the ICC to do its job: holding perpetrators of international crimes accountable for their actions. This is behavior worthy of a crime family, not a member of the United Nations.
Glad to see #ICC arrest warrants issued against Taliban leaders for gender persecution in Afghanistan. Unquestionable on the merits. But damn it be nice if it wasn't coming from an institution that has failed to resolve its own gender issues: icc-cpi.int/news/situation…
Useful summary from @KholoodKhair on the various Sudan negotiations - none of them promising
You wait months for talks to coalesce and then three come along at once... After Egypt's attempts to get some traction with a Burhan-Hafter meeting, now the UN and US are to hold separate talks. Long 🧵 + #KeepEyesOnSudan #Sudan #MediationSeason sudantribune.com/article302516/
Grateful to @khoureld for the dedicated reporting from Sudan to document the devastating human cost of USAID’s demise. A heartbreaking but necessary read: washingtonpost.com/world/2025/06/…
Trump is defunding the conflict monitor @HRL_YaleSPH. Its work was used in ICC indictments of Russia for war crimes. Its maps of scorched earth in Darfur informed urgent (& Pulitzer-winning) stories on Sudan we ran last year. 📄nyti.ms/4kBz9Hw 📺youtu.be/H231YlstDKk
📢 It’s official: @HRL_YaleSPH shuts down on July 1 and ends its missions on tracking Ukraine’s abducted kids and genocide in Darfur without further funding. We will continue our work as long as we can, but we are running on fumes. See @CNN story from today below ⬇️.
If this can be done (in full view of the press, no less) to a US Senator, then how can any of us feel safe?
🚨 #BREAKING @SenAlexPadilla tries to interrupt a press conference by @DHSgov Sec @KristiNoem and he’s forcibly removed. California’s senior U.S. Senator was handcuffed and detained. Video from @AlexPadilla4CA’s staff 🚨
This is devastating. The quality of work @hrl_yaleSPH has produced is unparalleled & has rightly become an invaluable source in the pursuit of accountability for international crimes. The only winners from this news are perpetrators.

Elon needs to work on his bomb drop chops. Least surprising reveal of all time. Truly. Who out there imagined DJT was *not* in the Epstein files?
