*Calls a press conference* “Yeah that’s not for me to comment on”
EPPING: Confronted on the fact his officers escorted pro-migrant demonstrators to the Epping protest Essex Chief Constable Harrington says it is "not for me to comment" on his own police force's actions.
Corfu is like something out of a fantasy novel. My dad took a wrong turn on the bike one day and spent thirty minutes barreling through a forest of cobwebs.
Even the most experienced ethnoguessr enjoyer would be stumped by the faces of rural Corfu, each of which could be a pin dropped randomly anywhere in Europe

My latest argues that the ceasefire may have stopped the shooting, but it’s no return to normal. Syria has changed at its core, and without tackling the underlying causes, this calm won’t hold. en.majalla.com/node/326545/po…
As it stands, this is Starmer’s best hope for ending the Channel crisis
Greece has presented other EU governments with what it called its strictest plan to deter migrants and is pushing for “return hubs” outside the continent. politico.eu/article/greece…
Greece’s migration minister from Copenhagen, where a meeting with EU ministers is taking place, says that that “the return of illegal migrants should be our first priority. If you enter Europe illegally or your asylum application is rejected you have no right to stay in Europe.”
Happening now: The largest protest of wartime Ukraine is underway in central Kyiv over President Zelensky’s push to dismantle the country’s independent anticorruption agencies. Thousands of protesters and more pouring in. Chants of “Shame!” among others. They demand Zelensky veto…
The only Tory I have any trust in regarding housing is Jenrick. He actually had an excellent planning reform proposal when he was housing secretary. (It was sabotaged by a Tory backbench revolt enabled by Johnson's fecklessness.)
My last interaction with James was: He and some of his friends were discussing how awful it is for people to want to build new houses. I said "no, we need them. People my age can't afford houses". He and his friends then turned to me, looked me in my eyes, and burst out…
“To a certain subset of male mind, the non-existence of this film [Kubrick’s Napoleon] is as great a cultural loss as the Library of Alexandria.” Great article. Would also recommend DJ Taylor’s very good biography of Thackeray, for those who like That Sort of Thing.
Ulsterisation update
"'We are going to have a summer of riots. You can just feel it. It is a tinderbox.'" After protests outside asylum hotels, @nicholaswatt reports what he has been told by a parliamentary veteran, who warns: "'My constituents feel they are losing control'". #Newsnight

All that money and your house doesn’t even look like the brutalist HQ of a fascist supervillain
Fuck you money
I was unaware that in 2007, the Russian Orthodox Church canonised all British and Irish saints before 1054 (the East/West Schism)
I cannot say quite how the last 2 days have salved my soul. Driving A and B roads from Oxford to Carmarthen and back. Eagles, hawks, hares, deer, churches, the Cotswolds, the Brecons, the Forest of Dean, Monmouthshire, the odd castle, we have such a beautiful country.
Outstanding read from the incomparable @arisroussinos unherd.com/2025/07/barry-…
Marvellous piece. I hate even acknowledging Kubrick’s Napoleon. Life would be so much richer if it were in it.
