I woke up this morning feeling strangely unsettled...and realised that despite (or perhaps, because of) 30+yrs in conventional govt service, I'm now starting to question everything I thought I once knew about my country and its institutions.
So little, so late, President @vonderleyen : After you have given Israel 21 months a free pass in Gaza, it will take more than words to prevent Israel from completing its genocidal mission and overt ethnic cleansing campaign. And even more, to repair what's left of the EU…
Civilians cannot be targets. Never. The images from Gaza are unbearable. The EU reiterates its call for the free, safe and swift flow of humanitarian aid. And for the full respect of international and humanitarian law. Civilians in Gaza have suffered too much, for too long.…
I was apolitical as civil servant; independent voter now. I’ve supported different parties at different times. I decided I could never again vote Tory after Brexit. Today, I conclude I can never again vote Labour, after their failure to act on Gaza. A grotesque moral failure.
Despicable
An Israeli soldier: “We’re looking for babies, but there are no babies left. I killed a girl, she was 12—but I’m looking for a baby.” — And yet the West still tries to paint this as “the most moral army. Meanwhile, This is the reality of these blood hungry peoples
Fgs @YvetteCooperMP @DavidLammy this is not “complex”; if you can’t sort this out, we can pretty much forget about you sorting anything out at all. Get a grip.
Around 80 students from Gaza have defied unimaginable challenges - managing, in the midst of a war, to get accepted by UK universities. We've been speaking to 19-year-old Malak, who's been awarded a scholarship to study at Cambridge but can't get here due to Home Office rules.
Human beings are fallible. Great leaders are fallible. Churchill was flawed. British people voted him out at the end of the war, despite deeply appreciating his leadership through the war. Is Zelensky’s time running out, too?
BREAKING: 🇺🇦 Mass protests against Zelensky's regime have begun in Kyiv
Genuine questions 1. What are Western Values? 2. What are British Values? I mean, really and actually, given the support of and enabling of the crime of crimes, a GENOCIDE
Absolutely crucial that Pres @ZelenskyyUA veto this law. Its enactment would damage Ukraine's reputation and credibility, its path to EU & NATO integration and, more decisively, the victory against russia. All those who have supported Kyiv since 2014 are sounding the alarm today.
The Nobel Laureate Center for Civil Liberties calls on the President of Ukraine to veto Draft Law No. 12414, which destroys Ukraine's anticorruption reform ccl.org.ua/en/claims/the-…
Excellent post. Applicable to many other countries as well - we cannot be our best selves internationally if we allow our democracy and institutions to corrode domestically.
I’ll say it once again — in reality, Ukraine as a state and as a nation is fighting two major wars at the same time. The first is, of course, Russia’s full-scale invasion. The second is the internal war of Ukrainian civil society against the dark side of its own state. Against…
Israelis and Palestinians in common cause, to free themselves of their extremists on both sides. This is the potential future, if enough of them can come together to reject hatred and division.
Now in Tel Aviv: Thousands of Jews and Palestinians are marching together against the starvation in Gaza and for an immediate ceasefire deal to end the annihilation and return the hostages
DO SOMETHING, then. I was a diplomat, once, there’s plenty we could DO, if we truly cared. Words are cheap. Your sentiments are hollow, if not backed by real, substantive action - not just a few token gestures. Do something.
The suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths. Alongside 25 other partners, the UK message is clear: the war in Gaza must end now. We need an immediate ceasefire, release of all hostages and a full resumption of aid. gov.uk/government/new…
"But nothing has prepared me for the sheer horror I’m witnessing now: the weaponisation of starvation against an entire population." "Every day I watch patients deteriorate and die, not from their injuries, but because they are too malnourished to survive surgery."
Keir Starmer has described the situation in Gaza as "intolerable on many levels", just not the one where Britain stops arming Israel
Hundreds of Israelis are now marching in the center of Tel Aviv against the starvation of Gaza at the hands of the Israeli government. Some are holding sacks of flour.
🚨 RIGHT NOW opposite Labour Party HQ in London. We’ve turned their street into Jabaliya camp in Gaza. A genocide is happening, but the Labour government is supplying weapons, intelligence and diplomatic cover to the perpetrator. Protesting this is not terrorism.
The UK’s diplomatic language ladder: “concerned”; “gravely concerned”; “deplore”; “strongly deplore”; “condemn”; “condemn in the strongest terms”. None of these words translate into action. We never use the word “genocide” because that would impose a legal duty on us to act.
In 2026, as the world's press step carefully over the blood-stained rubble of Gaza's killing grounds we, the British govt, will remind the world how we issued strongly worded statements very strongly. On one occasion we deplored.
My god, WHO IS KILLING THEM??
In recent weeks hundreds of Palestinians have been killed while waiting for food and aid trib.al/VUiFfe3
