China, Russia, India, MAGA America: They’re not just repressing—they’re crafting visions of the good life. My @NoemaMag piece on how illiberal powers shift from statecraft to soulcraft—and why liberals must pay attention. noemamag.com/from-statecraf…

O filósofo canadiano escreveu um livro onde ensaia uma aproximação mais cultural do que política ao liberalismo, uma dimensão onde, na sua opinião, se pode encontrar uma “estrutura de personalidade”. publico.pt/2025/07/06/mun…
My book was reviewed, I think, in NRC. It's paywalled, though, and if anyone has a subscription, I'd love a pdf. [email protected] nrc.nl/nieuws/2025/06…
Job! Continuing position (= tenure track) in political economy at Flinders University in Adelaide.

Great review by @mkw38 that beautifully weaves together books by me, @samuelmoyn and @EmmaPlaninc. " Liberalism Against Itself, Liberalism as a Way of Life, and Regenerative Politics each seeks to reshape liberal thought in original and fundamental ways."
Inspired by John Dunn’s essay of the same name, I’ve written a review essay on three recent books, on ‘the future of liberalism’ 1. Liberalism Against Itself @samuelmoyn 2. Liberalism as a Way of Life @alex_usyd 3. Regenerative Politics @EmmaPlaninc doi.org/10.1080/095575…
I capital L love this review of my book by John McGowan for Perspectives on Politics. "Damn the torpedoes—your intellectualist nitpicking, your sophisticated anti-sentimentalism, your seen-it-all cynicism—and read this book." @PoPpublicsphere bit.ly/4lqgUFw

Great conversation with Samantha Hancox-Li for @LiberalCurrents. We talked less about the culture wars and more about liberal vs. non-liberal visions of the good life—and we pushed each other on points of disagreement, which made it all the better. liberalcurrents.com/neon-liberalis…
How has it never really hit me before that these two books were published within months of each other in 1932?

Whoa! I didn't realize but I made the cover of Portugal's national newspaper!! There's my stupid beautiful face.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Teresa de Sousa for @Publico (Portugal’s leading daily) about the future of liberalism—and why I’m worried that we’re heading toward a divorce between liberalism and democracy. publico.pt/2025/07/06/mun…

Teresa de Sousa e @alex_usyd hoje no Público numa entrevista imperdível. Leiam se puderem e o livro dele também. Tradução de @Pedroeloidu🍀
This article in @thirdworldq examines how Mainland Chinese immigrants learn about their Chineseness as a sign of difference and how they apply the tool of racial capital to manage the ‘othering’ process (such as concealing Chineseness and reassessing Hong Kongers’ identity).
My review on @alex_usyd recent book , and the book Gabriele Badano and Alasia Nuti, has been out in @PoliticalTheory. Both are great innovative philosophical works that explain how Rawlsianism can respond to some pressing problems nowadays. Strongly recommend! 👍
I'm excited to share that the roundtable on my book Democracy Tamed has now been published in @HEIjournal. My response to essays by @DHalikias, @dcharette43, & Greg Conti is below. Thanks also to Emre Gercek for the Introduction. tandfonline.com/eprint/MCNFUZT…
A sweet and sad remembrance by my friend and colleague @GhazaviVD , about a real-life Leslie Knope. My friend was assassinated. In a world of shrinking political ideals, she was a beacon smh.com.au/world/north-am…
