It is now over a year since a damning parliamentary committee report about the shared ownership scheme. And what has the government done over the last 12 months? Zilch. Nothing. Nada. @AngelaRayner shared ownership is not affordable housing. Do better.

No, @StuartHensby shared ownership is not a 'step on the ladder'. It's a trap. The scheme generates an above-inflation income stream for registered providers while shared owners face unmanageable costs that *prevent* staircasing: they are sitting ducks. @mtpennycook please act

Do NOT buy new builds in the UK, particularly if they’re leasehold. You’re signing your finances away to unlimited service charges, ground rents, and there’s zero consumer protection against structural defects. Back the consumer not the builder. #leasehold #EndOurCladdingScandal
We are backing local builders. Ripping up the planning rule book. Removing barriers to building. That's our Plan for Change in action.
🚨 Merton Council is paying thousands a month to a private landlord for this temp accommodation. Around £1,000 💷 per room. 7 rooms. No working oven. Leaks and Rats. Please watch and #RT 🙏🏽
🔴 BUYBACKS 🖋️ @LKPleasehold "given the complexity and unbalanced nature of shared ownership (...) an obligatory buy-back scheme should be imposed on all shared ownership providers" We agree. Funding shared ownership buybacks should be a govt priority. leaseholdknowledge.com/leaseholders-s…
I find it bizarre that #MarkHawthornwaite #LandmarkInsGrp seems to believe that Freeholders provide a service. Let’s be clear, they provide Leaseholders with absolutely nothing other than a large bill for doing FA.
"It crosses an ethical line when developers use their financial leverage to squeeze buyers, often first-time buyers or #SharedOwnership purchasers, who are already navigating complicated arrangements", says @RobcHailstone in @TConveyancer todaysconveyancer.co.uk/have-housing-d…
A sobering experience to see how justice is used by the wealthy. Most of the 80+ seats were filled with the KCs, barristers & solicitors representing just SIX freeholders compared to a handful for the Gov representing nearly 5 million #leaseholders

I am a shared owner trapped in an unmortgageable flat that was sold as 'affordable' housing. My service charge is now 6k pa. I can't sell and I can't remortgage. Despite warm words in opposition, this Government has made absolutely no difference to me in the last 12 months.
🗨️ “It’s ended up being the worst thing I’ve ever done in my entire life.” @mhclg: “We are considering what more can be done to improve the experience of shared owners.” Shared ownership is a trap @mtpennycook. It's time for the Govt to fund buybacks. telegraph.co.uk/money/property…
Shared owner, Deepa, has started a petition calling on her landlord, Peabody, to buy back her shared ownership home. #SharedOwnership change.org/p/free-deepa
If you plan to be a shared owner, get ready for this. It happens almost every year when our housing association sends the service charge balance. Last year mine was £1,064. Largest I received was just under £4,000. ❌ Shared ownership is sold as 'affordable' housing.
Today's Poll: If you were hit by an unexpected bill for £1,000 today, could you cover it?
@UKLabour committed to “decisive action to improve building safety, including through regulation” A year on and we’ve seen nothing of the sort. Meanwhile, homeowners are being shafted by big corporate developers, hiding behind expensive legal teams and outdated legislation
Following last week’s High Court decision to strike out a claim from compensation from a leading 🏴fire & building safety victim - we have secured a press release from Mr Wilson. We offer our enormous support to him & his family at this very difficult time. @EOCS_Official #Redrow

How long before that number goes down as #leaseholders are thrown out of their homes through #forfeiture cos they've already been bankrupted by said third party owner? 🤔 I know 2 that can be taken from that 5m and, as I'm facing forfeiture too, another 1 possibly soon! 😓😢
5m Leaseholders waiting to be free from exploitation. Only a very bad law could legitimise ownership by a third party of a home paid for by someone else. We are the only remaining Leasehold country in the West, a feudal outlier. It's pathetic. x.com/keveen2/status…
"the cladding issues affected the value of the home negatively. In 2007, the flat had a market value of £161,950. When the family finally sold the home at auction in December 2024, it was valued at £120,000" ❗@alexjjnorris why are victims still paying for this crisis? 👇

You’re not backing #leaseholders. Complete failure by @UKLabour on addressing #cladding - millions of us trapped, unable to sell or remortgage, living in death traps. This should be your #1 priority. Such a missed opportunity for Labour. Sort it out @LucyMPowell @Keir_Starmer
Bates “has called for an independent body to administer payouts for public scandals, including Horizon, tainted blood and Windrush” ✅ Add the cladding and building safety scandal to that list, please. Successive govts have failed to protect victims so compensation is essential.

This is completely messed up. Leaseholders are real people living under a broken system. They have tried to speak up in court and were shut out. Why? Because they didn’t have the money or the legal support in time. But that’s exactly the problem. Ordinary people, even those…

So disappointed with this outcome 😡 When will leaseholders be allowed a voice in such important discussions? Confidence in the judicial review process has just hit rock bottom but we will not give up. Onwards and upwards @NLC_2019 @LKPleasehold @LiamSpender
Sadly, we were not successful in our attempt to intervene in the judicial review, and no leaseholder group will be involved. But ... freeholders' have spent a small fortune to ensure leaseholders are not involved in the case.
