This is the claimed merger efficiency—avoiding interchanges between two networks would purportedly mean fewer delays. But two railroads can just contract for a smooth hand-off of traffic, without a merger—i.e., the claimed benefit is not merger-specific.
Why are the anticompetitive effects? The UP-Northfolk merger would give the merged railroad buying power over all input providers, including workers. Indeed, unions might “lie on the tracks.” This is true regardless of whether their two networks overlap.
I would faint if @TheEconomist--or any business journal really--ever condemned a merger. Whether explaining price hikes or tie-ups, the business press can be counted on to peddle an industry’s talking points. Short🧵
I think a born and raised Michigan doctor running a campaign on kitchen table economics issues, fighting corruption and big corporations, and a foreign policy that can win back the state’s large disaffected Arab American population is a pretty great fit for Michigan
At some point, you just have to call their bluff. If they want to suffer in Dubai or wherever over paying a little more tax, oh well, bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out. wsj.com/world/uk/the-u…
This is an absolutely fascinating piece.

The dam is breaking. Even most shameless members of Congress & Vox/Slow Boring clique are making statements b/c they realize silence is a Bad Look now. How long until LinkedIn strivers post about how they're humbled & thrilled to announce they were against war crimes all along?

The 2015 version of Google was 10x better, actually. Can we get it back please? 🙏
Then there’s the remarkable evolution in Search. We’ve created entirely new ways to search like Lens + Circle to Search, and we keep incorporating our most advanced AI models. Now AI Overviews and AI Mode are reimagining the types of queries people can ask and we can answer. The…
This is from a short interview he did a decade ago on the Bronx Science Encompassed podcast, where he talked about how much going to public school shaped him for the better, allowed him to feel comfortable in his own skin, and how central that time was to how he views the city.
NYC Mayoral Zohran Mamdani stated on a podcast that he went to Bronx Science because he didn’t get into Stuyvesant and “I ain’t going to public school”. This millionaire socialist candidate truly feels ״Free and Government run for you, but not for thee.”
This genocidal famine is man made which means intervention to stop it could be undertaken immediately, it could be stopped now. And the fact regional and world governments are just sitting back watching it happening is beyond the pale. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

I need everybody to get a bit smarter and realise when you randomly start seeing loads of adverse media about a celebrity who’s publicly stood up for trans rights, palestine ect it is likely a paid smear campaign to discredit them and their views…
You’re telling me there’s a PR firm that was hired to attack Pedro Pascal?
scream 7 is bringing back characters that have been dead for literal decades because they are DESPERATE not to flop after they lied about their lead actress to fire her for showing empathy for a genocide still going two years later.
I hope #Scream7 is the best since the original. I want no fan service just for the sake of fan service. It needs to make sense with the story. With Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson in charge, I have faith. Just don't make Sidney dumb. Marketing should start in September.
The unanimous position of the media is that things only come into being when people like Eric get convinced of them, and the people who did the convincing were somehow still wrong, even though they were right, because Eric wasn't convinced yet
Yes. In November 2023, I did not think that intent was clear. But I also argued that the question of whether it was or wasn't had no policy implications because starving/terror bombing civilians in service of regime change is no more permissible than doing so as an end in itself
If you're talking about your dental hygienist aunt, sure. If you're talking about politicians & media figures who expect to go from making 6-7 figures influencing atrocities to making 6-7 figures crying over the results & still bullshitting about their causes, absolutely not.
Tweeting "I told you so" at people who change their mind about what's happening in Gaza does nothing to help the kids who are being starved to death. Welcome people into the tent. Build a bigger coalition and use it to force political change.
Rachel Reeves considers overruling supreme court in £44bn car finance scandal. Law may be bent to protect banks from their follies. A licence to misbehave. Any chance of laws to cap bankers' bonuses, higher taxes? NO. It is one-way traffic. theguardian.com/business/2025/…
I think the sudden neoliberal opposition to the famine (not the genocide, they still support that) in Gaza comes from the fact that they want to keep controlling the discourse. It's not a concession -- Lord knows they're not apologizing or expressing shame -- but a reaffirmation…
More or less every single person in the US with more power than, say, Rashida Tlaib has already made peace with the destruction of Gaza and its inhabitants. Anything they say now, unless matched by action, is strictly damage control.
He’s so heartbroken that he can’t bring himself to mention the genocidal country doing the starving and was happy to have a photo op with their war criminal leader Netanyahu. Never forgive these monsters.
Witnessing the catastrophic hunger and suffering of civilians, especially children, women, the sick and elderly, in Gaza has been heartbreaking. The crisis in Gaza must be met with an immediate and drastic surge in life-saving resources, such as desperately needed food, water,…
