I will (hopefully) be spending a few days in mid-August at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University for this programme — if you’re from around there & want to meet, DM me!

xAI commissioned us to analyze Grok 4’s math capabilities. Our findings: + It’s good at involved computations, improving at proofs (from a low base), and useful for literature search. - It favors low-level grinds and leans on background knowledge. Read on for examples!
Also redolent of Marx, actually!
Here’s a description of the French Revolution by Tocqueville I’d never seen: “Half-way down the stairs, we threw ourselves out of the window in order to get to the ground more quickly.”

This is unironically many people’s eschatology
live your life so that an imagined leftist historian scribbling notes in the future will be proud of you
The Online Safety Act is a perfect example of why you should never give into pearl clutching 'won't someone think of the children' paternalist conservative types. They always just end up willfully backing authoritarian censorship and anti-privacy laws which just hurt normal law…
Britain's main problems are the Left, and the NIMBYs. But the low-status Right are also getting more annoying.
Yoooooooo do any of my moots who are EA- or EA-adjacent want to serve as a character reference for me? I'm trying to actually apply for an EA thing and I realize now that I'm not actually close to anyone EA-adjacent IRL lol
Interesting thread from a litigator on the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker case. Famously, this case was funded by Peter Thiel with the goal of destroying Gawker, which it succeeded in doing. Medieval era common law had a prohibition on this exact kind of conduct, which was called…
With Terry Bollea's (Hulk Hogan's) death yesterday, it's a good time to look back at the biggest thing I was ever involved in. For over 3 years, I spent more than half of my worktime on one case-- Bollea v. Gawker. It was Charles Harder's case-- I handled "the appeal side".
I'm only like two levels less thin. Does this mean any media with me present is illegal in the UK or something? I wonder what applications this power has...

Found in my junk folder, @zagrebbi. Now to see if it was deserved!

Reminder to everyone, Hayek chose to finish The Constitution of Liberty … let’s discuss the implications.
I think it’s bad to leak people’s sex tapes and say that it’s good that they died because they sued you when you did that
Some hot-takes on political economy based on lots of reading for my exams!! open.substack.com/pub/eaconomics…
From Henry Sidgwick, The Methods of Ethics, 7th edition, Book III, Chapter 11:
I have to update my priors, previously I assumed it was only possible to botch the launch of a given political party once
My biggest takeaway is that the current US admin thinks of the AI race being most like the space race and not an explicit arms race. AI may require deterrence later (and by different means) but not rn is the vibe I am picking up. You win by building and adopting faster.
The AI Action Plan is out. Immediate reactions in this thread:
Have kids!
me: it's not okay to hit your sister 5yo: is it okay to kill Vladimir Putin? me: ...yes, if you were in a situation where it was somehow relevant it's okay to kill Vladimir Putin 5yo: well, my sister is WORSE than Vladimir Putin
about a year ago, his dad mentioned Putin in passing as an example of a bad person. this kid latched on to this like a heat seeking missile for an outgroup to plan hostilities against. he wanted to know all about Putin. He wanted to plan his assassination immediately.
