For decades, this town has had an on-again, off-again relationship with the country just 160 miles west as the crow flies. But ever since the start of the war in Ukraine, those ties have been superseded by the anger and activism of a cadre of volunteers. wapo.st/4hbP4Kt
Wrote about some of the weird ways people in Nome, one of the U.S. towns closest to Russia, are supporting fighters and refugees in Ukraine, for @washingtonpost washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/02…
This is the 4th time the race has relocated to Fairbanks (2003, 2015, 2017). Most of the route is fine, per trail breaker reports. Even the Dalzell Gorge. But the 75-mile run from Rohn to Nikolai is bare, bumpy, bad. Many mushers worried it would be a repeat of 2014.
Iditarod is moving the race to Fairbanks because of low/no snow between Rohn and Nikolai (thru the Buffalo Tunnels, Farewell Burn). Race will cut west from Fbx, then take a dog leg south from Kaltag to lower Yukon, go back up and resume normal route over the portage. New routing.

The whale could be with us for a long, ling time. It’s likely frozen to the spot, even if a big tide in mid-December does occur. There are no plans to move it.

The hottest atikluks in Alaska come from Nome, and are a mix of indigenous traditional design and the highest tech polyester. And, fun fact for all the owl heads: they’re named for the great horned owls upriver from Koyuk.

🗳️ We’re voting! An election facilitated by the NLRB has been set for Oct. 8, at which point the Anchorage News Guild will vote to unionize. 🗳️
Today, we share the exciting news that our newsroom staff has asked the leadership of the Anchorage Daily News to voluntarily recognize us as the Anchorage News Guild.
If unionization occurs, the Anchorage News Guild would be the only Alaska newsroom represented by a union. alaskasnewssource.com/2024/09/10/anc…
