Westside For Everyone
@WestsideForEv
Building a West LA where everyone can live, work, and grow.
LA residents wanted their streets to be safer so they created crosswalks They were celebrated on the news for stepping up when the city fell short So now the city is destroying the crosswalks 🫠

I walk this intersection everyday - this is dumb! It's a busy corner by a park where all the kids in the neighborhood play Why is it worth the city's time to remove hand-painted crosswalks? Who is being harmed? Meanwhile there's a swing left broken at that park for months

The City’s budget is constrained. Civil society steps up with money and labor to provide basic public goods. The City feels threatened and gives the finger to civil society. When Angelenos step up to fill the gaps, why does the @LACity feel threatened? @MayorOfLA @LACityCouncil

very cool how cities in los angeles county will take 600 days to decide whether to build something safe and useful, but they can mobilize to DESTROY something safe and useful in a matter of days they could've just spend the same time, money, and manpower making another crosswalk

Leadership should reckon with the scale of the need and create a realistic approach to addressing it asap that embraces residents who want to improve their communities.
The city currently has an incredible list of needed repairs and improvements, little budget, and an interminable process for requesting them that often results in them being denied. Yet it still demands a monopoly on making these repairs, so residents just suffer indefinitely.
This is genuinely a great idea. So much better for builders, too. I’d much rather be able to contribute to something the community wants/needs when I’m building than just repave a dangerous intersection, or whatever.
I’d love for the city to provide a map of street safety and eligible improvements, and if residents want to step up and provide them even if it’s not the city’s top priority, they should be able to do it.
I think cities should make a list of public works that local organizations can handle on their own. They can even apply online and get approval beforehand. It doesn't need to be rogue operators
Hey @KarenBassLA, I thought the city was broke. Why are we spending money REMOVING crosswalks across from a park and making the city less safe? cc @TraciParkforLA
lasted less than a week... jfc. Shame on this city, you clearly have the funds to send machinery to wipe them, but not paint them?

The goal is not for residents have to paint their own crosswalks. The goal is for streets to be safe. If the city can’t deliver that in a reasonable timeframe, it should support residents who want to make their streets safer—not fight them.

LA city government: “You can trash the city all you want. But don’t fix anything. That’s our job that we are not doing”

This is awesome - Stoner Park has recently seen DIY residents install benches and now crosswalks faster than it would take LA to coordinate its first interdepartmental meeting on it.
SB79 PASSES Local Gov committee! HUGE THANKS to those who voted in favor: @AsmJuanCarrillo, @JoshHooverCA, @AsmJamesRamos, @AsmChrisWard, @AsmLoriDWilson & @Stefani4CA! Thank you for your bold leadership on housing, transit and the environment for Californians everywhere!
The City of Paramount led SB79 opposition saying it was doing a great job of building housing on its own. Fact check: under 150 units have been built since 2018 in a city of 50k, a 0.3% increase. Meanwhile, the price of housing has increased ~60%.
