I’ve got a phenomenal deal for POTUS Negotiating a US-Japan Trade Deal That’s Good for America hudson.org/trade/negotiat…
President Trump says a trade deal has been reached with Japan: “It’s a great deal for everybody." Japan seems to have negotiated incoming tariffs down to 15%, but that can still hurt Japan's economy. It isn't great. Japan originally wanted no tariffs.
There it is
AP: The trade agreement reduces U.S. customs duties on Japanese cars to 15%
That’s got to be the happy face of someone who got a deal on autos
The $550 billion sounds a lot like Ishiba’s $1 trillion tbh
I would discount the headline investment number -- Trump also exaggerates, Japan has been interested in the Alaska LNG project for a while, and corporate Japan routinely invests large sums abroad out of the earnings from its existing FDI ... 2/
No mention of change to auto tariffs Got to wait for Tokyo’s confirmation
*TRUMP: ANNOUNCES TRADE DEAL WITH JAPAN - $550 INVESTMENT AND 15% TARIFF
Taiwan's semiconductor manufacturing makes it a crucial partner to the US. @augama and @WalteRiley host a panel discussion on how Taiwan can realign its trade strategy and strengthen its resilience in the face of the rising Chinese threat. Watch: hudson.org/events/how-tru…
Ishiba staying on is no surprise LH and UH aren’t his fault even though he’s LDP prez Those running in LDP prez race knew the risks ahead Opposition isn’t going to force anything in the near term and risk election fatigue Short term likelihood is a new cabinet
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Monday he will stay in office to tackle challenges such as rising prices and high U.S. tariffs after a weekend election defeat left his coalition with a minority in both parliamentary chambers.
Does Komeito have a future and is it with the LDP?
So, what’s the plan for the LDP? Replace Ishiba with Koizumi, who’s arguably even more liberal on social issues? Or with Takaichi Sanae, and finally drive Komeito and Soka Gakkai insane?
Tomorrow morning online w/ @HudsonInstitute We talk US-Taiwan trade negotiations but more importantly about the future of Taiwan’s economy How Trump’s Tariffs Will Affect US-Taiwan Relations hudson.org/events/how-tru…
Governor Koike suggests Japan has been too inward looking over the last 30 years Hopes to promote international cooperation Earlier suggested too much focus has been on trade negotiations over other economic matters
Happening now at @HudsonInstitute
BESSENT ON JAPAN: OUR PRIORITIES ARE NOT INTERNAL GOVERNMENT BUT BEST DEALS FOR U.S. -CNBC INTERVIEW
I can’t imagine the US position has changed since yesterday’s election The Trump team’s #1 priority still is getting a trade deal that benefits (disproportionately) the US Giving Ishiba a win, which could help him stay in office a little longer, is less of a priority
Japan's PM Ishiba: I need to stay in office to deal with tariff talks, rising prices and economic issues.
LDP+Komeito coalition come up a few seats shy of the 125 they need to have a majority in Japan’s Upper House Further uncertainty ahead for Japanese politics
Just a reminder that @NikkeiAsia has a ***free*** blog running tonight on the upper house election in Japan. Lots of updates to come. asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Japan… via @NikkeiAsia
