After repeated shocks, families in Malawi face a difficult lean season. Maize production is 20% below the 5-year average, and prices remain the highest in Eastern & Southern Africa. Early support is essential to help communities prepare and cope.

Today, the 🇲🇼UN Resident Coordinator visited WFP’s warehouses, where teams are preparing for a tough lean season. Food is limited, prices are rising & families are still recovering from years of climate shocks. WFP is ready to respond—early donor support is key to saving lives.


🚨 Malawi is facing a deepening food and nutrition crisis. Acute malnutrition nearly doubled last lean season, hitting children and women hardest. Since last year, WFP has supported over 53,500 people. As the lean season approaches, continued assistance is essential.

No lights at home? No problem! Learners in rural Malawi are now able to use solar-charged lamps to study at night, thanks to @NorwayMFA for clean energy systems.


🌧️ Disasters shouldn’t catch us off guard. In Malawi, with support from @EUinMalawi, WFP is acting early: using forecasts to protect lives, crops & communities before crisis hits. From reacting to anticipating—anticipatory action is essential to prepare for emergencies.


🚤 To strengthen emergency preparedness in Malawi, @WFP has handed over critical boat repair supplies to the Malawi Police Marine Department. Funded by #FCDO through the #PREPARE project, the support will help keep rescue boats operational for life-saving missions in emergencies.

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee, with WFP support, is assessing food insecurity across households. The IPC-based report, expected in August, will guide where and when food support is needed for the upcoming lean season. Timely action starts with timely data.
📢 Kicking Off Malawi’s 2025/26 Food Insecurity Analysis! With support from @IrlEmbMalawi 🇮🇪, WFP is working with the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee & @theipcinfo to identify where food assistance will be needed - and for how long.




This week, Swiss Government officials visited Blantyre 🇲🇼 to witness the impact of their support towards the #ElNiño emergency response. The Swiss 🇨🇭 funding helped WFP and the @MalawiGovt reach 1.6M people with maize and over 48K with fort. corn soya blend to treat malnutrition

Leveling up #Malawi’s food systems! @WFP, @MalawiStandards & partners have launched a week-long training on method validation for food quality & safety testing under the #SesameExport Project with 🇯🇵 support. A vital move for resilient food systems & stronger trade capacity.



Last week, the @EUinMalawi delegation visited Enukweni Primary School in Mzimba to witness the impact of the EU-funded #TSOLATAII programme, implemented by @WFP in partnership with @MalawiGovt. The prog. has reached over 860K learners with daily meals and empowered 28K farmers.


Yesterday, the Iceland Head of mission visited Dzikonilonse Primary School in Nkhotakota where WFP, through support from the Government of Iceland: 🍛 10,000 children fed daily for 3 years 🌾 1,200 farmers supplying local schools 📚 Better nutrition, learning & livelihoods!




🤝 On 28 March, WFP, the Government of Malawi & Italy signed a €4M deal to expand Home-Grown School Feeding in Chikwawa to reach 20,855 learners! The initiative boosts food security, school attendance & supports local farmers 🌾 Today is the official launch.




🚚 During the 2023/24 lean season, WFP transported over 27,000 metric tons of government maize to food-insecure communities across Malawi. By strengthening logistics capacity and emergency preparedness, WFP ensures fast and efficient life-saving support reaches those who need it

A small saving can spark big change. In 2024, WFP supported 24,000+ farmers in savings groups and trained 8,800+ women through the She Can pilot, building financial skills, income, and leadership for lasting empowerment.
