Atul Butte died yesterday. The world lost a giant. A big bear of a man. With a huge smile. With love for everyone. With energy that could power a room. I loved everything about Atul. I loved how he was always happy. I loved how excited he was about science and helping people.
Excited to share our new paper in @CellCellPress on Digital Phenotyping from Wearable Biosensors using AI to characterize Psychiatric Disorders & identify Genetic Associations (led by @JasonJLiu & @beaborsari) doi.org/10.1016/j.cell…
Wow, fatty acid oxidation in neurons! Time to update the textbooks?!
A study in @NatMetabolism shows that under glucose-depleted conditions, neurons can use fatty acids as an alternative source of energy to support synaptic function. go.nature.com/46ArR2G
Mitochondrial health is poised to become a pillar of the MAHA movement, @ahannahseo reports. theatlantic.com/health/archive…
Using population and statistical genetics across 750,000 people, we have identified a putative mechanism for an important aging biomarker: the apparent age-related mtDNA mutation accrual in blood. Very excited this is up!
As we all age, we accumulate mtDNA mutations, but what underlies this hockey stick pattern? See our new pre-print: we treat mtDNA SNV burden as a "trait" and use GWAS to uncover the mechanism in blood. Led by newly minted MD-PhD @rahulg603 w/ @LabNeale. shorturl.at/IqYY8
Very cool work by @rahulg603 @LabNeale @VamsiMootha, and delighted to contribute. Super cool new connections between mtDNA mutational burden in blood & clonal hematopoiesis 👇

Wow very big news for biomedical research
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above…

Let’s not forget metabolism!
"Chance favors the prepared mind" Louis Pasteur. Yesterday I saw his house, his lab, his legacy: the germ theory of disease, vaccines, biomanufacturing, research x medicine, global public health, the French resistance, the discovery of mRNA & HIV, and on and on. So inspiring.
Tabla legend #ZakirHussain just succumbed to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). RIP. I know so many Indian Americans, all in their 70s-80s, with IPF or related ILD. Has anyone else noticed this pattern? If so, what might be the mechanism? Genes? Pollution? Bird feathers?
Hypoxia in a pill! Chronic, continuous 11% FIO2 suppresses brain pathology in models of mitochondrial disease and aging, but we need practical alternatives. We combine a Hb "left-shifter" with a HIF2a inhibitor to achieve therapeutic hypoxia in mice. jci.org/articles/view/…

Thrilled to share our approach for language model-guided discovery of unknown mammalian metabolites: DeepMet. We’ve now used this approach to discover ~50 new human and mouse metabolites! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Excited to share our new paper led by @mattabolite in collaboration with Saharon Rosset showing that the Warburg Effect is the result of faster ATP production by glycolysis than respiration. A 🧵... 1/n pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

It is approaching 20 years since the passing of Stan Korsmeyer. Stan was one of the best scientists, best mentors and best people I have known in my life. I miss Stan very, very badly.

Clearly, we’re now in the golden age of biology: physiology/medicine Nobel to tiny RNAs; physics Nobel to neural networks; chemistry Nobel to protein structure prediction.
Today's @NobelPrize for John Hopfield recognizes only one of his contributions - he's a true polymath. I strongly recommend his solo author PNAS papers (i) long-range e- tunneling in proteins (1974), (ii) kinetic proof-reading (1974), (iii) Hopfield nets (1982). Each is a gem!
