Good points from @wendymink on blocks to education and opportunity in the big bad bill. Here are my thoughts on another way to think about poverty in a high-tech age: open.substack.com/pub/feliciakor…
Trump’s Big Act cuts ~$300B from the higher ed system & gouges SNAP+Medicaid. New loan limits for grad students will put post-BA/BS degrees out of reach for many low/middle income students. Loss of educational access and support will cut off opportunity. newamerica.org/education-poli…

Your Prime Day reminder that half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food & housing costs. A third have had to rely on government assistance like SNAP — which is about to get cut. If Bezos can spend $50M on a wedding, Amazon can afford to treat its workers with dignity.
My peeps!
BREAKING: Scientists are staging a “science fair” in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.
I’ve got something to say about our neo-Gilded Age economy: open.substack.com/pub/feliciakor…
-Ultra-wealthy elites -Political corruption -Vast inequality -Giant monopolies These problems defined the Gilded Age of the late 1800s. And they're dominating America again today. But we have the power to fight back.
#OtD 6 July 1977 feminist bar-library, LaSal, was opened, revolutionising the cultural life of Barcelona. A year later, a women's publisher was created at LaSal, declaring: "We will publish books written by women that are the expression of women" stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/10628/…
💗 universal social policies - like health care access without profit motive or vast wasteful corporate bureaucracy:
#OtD 5 Jul 1948 the UK National Health Service (NHS) was founded to provide free universal healthcare. The Labour Party started permitting charges in 1949 and it has been under attack ever since. It's up to us, the working class to defend it stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/10531/…

My mother worked for the nlrb for 30 years. Imperfect to be sure and never what working people in the 30s thought it would/ could be. But essential.
📅 On this day in labor history, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) was created in 1935 through the Wagner Act—a hard-won victory by workers demanding a voice on the job. For CTU this legacy is one we must remember and build on. The workers’ organizing that pushed…
“Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life,” wrote five former NWS directors from both Democratic and Republican administrations in an open letter on May 2nd. In Houston, 44% of NWS positions are vacant.
Not correct at all. Medicare and Medicaid were 1960s programs - Lyndon Johnson not FDR. There was indeed a wealth tax in 1935 - with a rate of 79% for those making over $5 million. This we can try!
Correct

The Biden administration established a 10 mile buffer zone around Chaco Canyon, a 1,000-year old Pueblo sacred site. Now the Trump admin is proposing opening the buffer zone to oil and gas development. azcentral.com/story/news/loc…
Yet another in a loooong list of blatantly antisemitic remarks from Trump. He has told us who he is over and over and over again. He and the MAGA movement's casual Jew hatred makes everyone in our community less safe.
Trump describes certain bankers as "shylocks"
Trump’s #AlligatorAlcatraz is on Miccosukee land. During World War II most Japanese internment camps were on reservations. Ppl have a hard time seeing tribal sovereignty as relevant to other social issues, but it’s all connected.
I would also call such a person a bigot. And meshugennah.
We have words for people who claim to be fighting anti-Semitism and also call bankers "Shylocks." 1. Chutzpahdik. And 2. Anti-Semites.
Historian here: not quite, tho I like the sentiment. Medicare and Medicaid were both passed in 1965. Thank the civil rights mvmt and Lyndon Baines Johnson.
