New story: What is driving Tony Petitti's push for the 4-4-2-2-1 playoff format? Assurances to TV partners and league members, multiple sources say. A Big Ten spokesperson denied it. bit.ly/40v6mfZ
As always, follow the money. And that’s exactly what @ByPatForde did…

Well well well... Anyone else shocked that the Big10 leadership continues to push for whatever their media partners tell them to... irrespective of the harm it does to CFB as a whole... in search of the almighty dollar? -Form "an alliance" with ACC/Pac-12 to kill the…

Day Three B1G Media Days vs. Day Three SEC Media Days.
There is no reason the SEC should expand past 16. The current 16 schools enjoy a great advantage right now over the other 53 P4 schools as the strongest conference. Why would we give that advantage up? B1G wants to form 2 super leagues. It would ruin CFB and be bad for Texas.
I know that people get tired of talking about conference realignment and CFP format, but I think Texas fans (and fans of other SEC schools) need to start paying attention to what the B1G is proposing. It’s very bad. The SEC is in a great spot, and B1G is trying to ruin it.
Pat Forde now reporting Petitti is pushing this plan so he can a whole two extra games to NBC and CBS. This guy has to go. si.com/college-footba…
Finally out of hiding, B1G commissioner Tony Petitti defended his radical CFP plan on Tuesday. I think it's important we all understand who he is and what he's trying to turn college football into. footballscoop.com/2025/07/23/ton…
This guy is not a college football fan. The third straight Big Ten commissioner to try to fundamentally alter the sport at everyone else’s expense.
Petitti is now defending the possibility of an 8-4 B1G team getting in to the CFP. "If you project that winning percentage across every other sport, I'm pretty sure you make the postseason. ... We've conditioned ourselves to think that if you're not a 1 or 2 loss team you're not…
Reading the quote tweets and replies of this is hilarious. Everyone is in agreement on how dumb Lincoln sounds, and then you have literally 1 account named “Big Ten Information” who goes “Bingo! Lincoln is exactly right!” 😂 as Stewart Mandel says, B1G people are in fantasy land
Lincoln Riley said there are “a million reasons why we should adopt the automatic qualifier” model and he cited the continuation of the rivalry with Notre Dame as a reason why. He spoke passionately about the meaning of the rivalry but also said it’s tied into the CFP decision.
Big Ten Media Days this year took place on an alternate planet. Planet Gaslight. The commissioner insists we'll all love 8-4 teams vying for CFP berths. The coaches are weirdly fixated on the SEC's schedules. And everyone talks exactly the same way. nytimes.com/athletic/65131…
A phenomenal line in the comments to the article from @slmandel summarizing the Big Ten's preference for 4-4-2-2-1. I used to resist comparisons to CBB, but this is spot-on.
Incredibly laughable If you truly want to EARN it, you let chips fall where they may based on the season they had Not being being handed 4 automatic spots all because you finally had 2 teams have success, (1 busted for cheating) They are ABSOLUTELY asking to be handed bids
He said people hear “automatic qualifiers” and have a misperception that the Big Ten wants to be handed something. “Everything we're talking about is earning it on the field,” Petitti said. “To go through that type of a gauntlet, to get to the to get the CFP, is a lot.”
Pretty amazing, look at the results of this poll. College football fans are overwhelmingly against the idea of “auto bids” being pushed by the B1G. Why is the B1G trying to ruin football? How unhappy are NBC and CBS with their failing B1G TV contract?
If the CFP expands to 16 teams, which of these two formats would you prefer?5
B1G @bigten afraid to compete for the CFP slots, its that simple. B1G wants 4 handouts simply for existing. Anti-competition. Make coaches jobs more secure in B1G is part of the goal. @SEC do NOT cave to this BS. SEC is better than to give in to this weak 💩being pushed by B1G.
Almost all the damage done to CFB over the last 15+ years was precipitated by the Big Ten. * Started the run on realignment in Dec 2009, when they called a PC & announced they had formed a search committee to expand by 1-3 teams. * Destroyed the Pac-12 after forming an alliance…
The Big Ten is determined to destroy college football.
Big Ten's Tony Petitti: "If you're 6-3 in the Big Ten, I would argue that's a good record. If you stumble in the non-conference I don't know why that would disqualify you (from playoff contention)"
This is one problem with the Big Ten 4-4-2-2-1-3 plan (the name is another problem, of course). A team can enter the season with reasonable assurance that if they don't lose more than three conference games they (essentially) are in the playoff. And non-con results are…

Wow. He said the quiet part out loud. No wonder he’s been hiding from the media for months. Anti-competitive & elitist ideas like this have no place in sports…
