This is a moving moment. This is a moment of joy. This is what it looks like when a refugee is no longer a refugee. High Commissioner @FilippoGrandi witnessed the emotional return of refugees to their home in Syria.
The world is full of crises and conflict. But there is also hope. At the border of Syria and Lebanon, High Commissioner @FilippoGrandi saw a ray of hope. He saw refugees who are finally realizing a dream held by so many forced to flee: the dream of returning home.

In Dara’a, I witnessed the return of Syrian refugees from Jordan. I was humbled by their brave choice to rebuild their lives in a place devastated by war. As one of them said, “we return because we love our country”. UNHCR works with the authorities in supporting returnees.
Nearly 2 million Syrians have been able to return home after over a decade uprooted. The country remains fragile and people need our help to rebuild their lives again. ℹ️ unhcr.org/global-trends #GlobalTrends

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. I am spending it in Syria with some of the 600,000 people who have returned from neighbouring countries after 14 years of conflict. Syria today is where returning Syrians — given security, opportunities and support — can finally stop being refugees.

At a meeting with President Aoun of Lebanon, we discussed how to increase opportunities for Syrian refugees to return home. Many refugees have already made that choice. But for returns to be sustainable, Syria needs more and faster international support. @LBpresidency
Marking #WorldRefugeeDay, @FilippoGrandi said "I chose to be in Syria on that day, in a place where we have the potential to have the largest refugee crisis in the world turned around and millions of people stop being refugees and go back home. We must work in that direction".
