Steed: I promised you a quiet ride in the country. Emma: What could be quieter than a milk float? Steed: Especially the way you drive. Emma: Who’s driving?
Steed: A milk float…they do a regular service, door to door, every five minutes…the most innocent thing they could find. What would you think if you saw one? A milkman doing his rounds.
The Hour that Never Was, probably the most loved of Dad's 15 Avengers episodes, was completed on this day 60 years ago. A short thread...
Includes a 64-page booklet retracing the history of the cult series and its impact; New Avengers comics; audio commentaries from the cast; restoration featurette; character featurettes; stunt featurette; interviews with director John Hough and Laurie Johnson.
Studiocanal's Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Collector's Box Set dedicated to The New Avengers is out on 12/11/2025. All 26 episodes restored. I presume it will have the original English language as well as VF dubbed option. 4k-ultra-hd.fr/film/coffret-c…
Joanna Lumley judging a Purdey haircut lookalike contest with hairdresser John Frieda.
Hair stylist John Frieda provides Jo Lumley with the 'Purdey cut', probably the fashion image which gave The New Avengers its most distinctive DNA.
A huge thank you to @BraxM for a superb chapter on Catweazle for our forthcoming book on Classic Children's TV. Mark has genuinely captured the magic - no pun intended - of one of the best-loved children's dramas. So good, it has put me in the mood to rewatch all 26 episodes...
Many thanks to the writers who contributed essays to our new book celebrating Children's TV in the 60s to 80s. We have only touched the surface of what was a deep treasure chest of kids and family shows during an era of 'shared TV': stop-motion, Supermarionation, live-action 1/2
The book covers the following series: Thunderbirds; The Herbs; The Owl Service; Catweazle; Ace of Wands; Mr Benn; The Changes; Children of the Stones; Midnight is a Place; Shillingbury Tales; Robin of Sherwood; Knights of God; Tube Mice; foreign language drama; BBC 80s drama.
Sylvia Anderson: “I based her on the Scarlet Pimpernel…Who would you expect to be the London agent for International Rescue? Certainly not the lady of the manor!” Cucumber sandwiches, I presume...
Remembering actor Robert James Brown, BOTD 1921. Made a memorable henchman in Emma Peel's first outing in Avengerland: faux fisherman and blacksmith, and a silent stalker in Little Bazeley-by-the-sea. Brown was equally adept at playing establishment figures and brutal baddies.
Forgotten shows. Strange Report. Anthony Quayle is ex-Scotland Yard criminologist Adam Strange who crisscrosses London in an old-fashioned taxi & solves crimes with the help of forensic scientist Hamlyn Gynt (Kaz Garas) and fashion model/artist Evelyn McClean (Anneke Wills). 1/
Clannad's musical score, which won a BAFTA award, was - for me - an integral part of the magic. The band scored all 26 episodes, recording solely in English for the first time. Legend reached No. 15 in the UK album charts while a single was also released: Robin (The Hooded Man).
Catweazle attracted a string of fine comic actors as guest stars.

Nice publicity still of Geoffrey Bayldon and his little co-star for the Daily Mirror which ran a feature on LWT's new Sunday teatime show Catweazle in time for its first UK broadcast on 15th February 1970. (Dutch viewers were already halfway through Series 1 by then.)
Sir Godfrey Tibbett is another brilliant character in #AViewToAKill - only he and his friend Roger could give us such a great double act… Check out our 40th anniversary celebration episodes out now on YouTube! 🥂❤️ 📸 youtu.be/xO961sXvSjI?si…
