Excited to share that I've been promoted to Producer & Off-Air Reporter with @NBCNews, managing coverage of the House of Representatives. I still stare up in awe at the dome every day and recognize what a privilege it is to do this for a living.
.@RepJeffries just set the record for the longest House floor speech in history, surpassing the previous record of 8 hours and 32 minutes set by Kevin McCarthy in 2021.
Early in his remarks at 5:30am, @RepJeffries said he'd go deeper into Matthew 25:35-40 from the New Testament. Now at 1pm, he has indeed circled back to that promise. "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink."
.@RepJeffries has now been speaking for three hours on the House floor, using the unlimited speaking time granted to the House leaders. The record for the longest House floor speech is 8 hours and 32 minutes, set by then Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in Nov 2021.
FWIW, this is now officially the longest vote in modern congressional history per @KyleAlexStewart
Rep. Steve Womack has been presiding over the House floor since the start of this vote series at 11:45am — over NINE hours ago. He’s only had one bathroom break. I’m told he is very very bored and singing the Eric Carmen song “ALL BY MYSELF” to himself.
While fours hours is a long time, it is not the record. In November 2021, Dems held open a vote on a GOP motion to adjourn for SEVEN hours as they tried to round up support for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Build Back Better. live.house.gov/?date=2021-11-…
Van Orden, who’s a yes on mega bill, pushes back on notion that Rs do watever Trump says: “The president of the United States didn't give us an assignment. We're not a bunch of little bitches around here okay? I'm a member of Congress. I represent almost 800,000 Wisconsinnites.”
Status check on the Trump Megabill in the House from two sides of the GOP debate. Rep. Ralph Norman (who voted against the package last night in rules) tells me he and a group of holdouts are headed to the White House today to discuss the situation w/ Trump and team (more)
