It's not just about scrapping Ofwat. The government should look at the whole package of Lib Dem proposals, like transforming the water companies into Public Benefit Corporations to stop dumping sewage and invest in their infrastructure before paying out to shareholders.

Then @Bobby_Dean raised the alarm over the possible loosening or even scrapping of 'ring-fencing' (a post-2008 rule separating our deposits from banks' riskier activities). It was interesting to see the minister defending this as a way to get more money into the real economy...

Scrapping Ofwat is a good first step. But we need a tough, new regulator. Whether it is sky-high bills or the destruction of our natural environment, it’s time these failing water companies were held properly to account.
