Lesson 44: First solo cross-country flight! Flew from KRHV -> KKIC (King City) -> KLSN (Los Banos) -> KRHV. Nearly 3 hours in the air and 200 miles traveled. Spent hours planning it. Definitely the most exhilarating flight so far - and the views didnโt disappoint!
Lesson 43: Second cross country flight. Flew from Reid Hillview (KRHV) to Los Banos (KLSN) to Oakdale (O27) then back home. Central Valley and San Luis Reservoir look amazing!
Canadian elevators are too big, too expensive. This means that we build many more 3-4 storey buildings as walkups, limiting accessibility. We should allow developers to build with smaller and more cost-effective European elevators. Read the whole piece! theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articlโฆ

Youโll never guess the assessed price of this home in San Francisco. Hint: itโs gonna make you puke.
When you see this phrasing in California, always check the property tax records ๐
Not a single apartment complex broke ground in San Jose in 2024. Then the city began cutting impact fees & "inclusionary zoning" requirements on a per-project basis. Literally weeks after this happened to a project near the light rail, construction began. It's not rocket science!

Another normal one from the Encino Property Ownerโs Association, utterly selfish in appealing an inoffensive 45 unit building on a major corridor (Ventura Blvd) - while at the same time advocating for โhousing to be on major corridors and not single family streetsโ

SF experienced 3-4 years of falling rents and home prices (and insane deals offered on downtown apartments) in the wake of the pandemic. Looks like that era is coming to an end.
Whatโs harder than simulating human intelligence? Finding a place to live in SF. Amid the AI boom, rental costs are skyrocketing as a new batch of tech workers race to outbid each other. ๐: Ezra Wallach sfstandard.com/2025/07/21/ai-โฆ
Del Mar continues to reject a 259-unit housing project that includes 85 affordable homes. State law requires cities that fail to meet housing goals to approve these projects. Del Mar missed its deadline, so it has to say yes, yet it still delays. timesofsandiego.com/business/2025/โฆ

I don't know why manufacturers aren't lining up to build pulsejet attack drones. Unlike missiles or aircraft, drones aren't meant to be stealthy or reliable; they're meant to be cheap & mass-produced. Pulsejets have an insane power-to-weight ratio and are very easy to manufacture
People mock but Iโve talked to an engineer that builds scaled down versions the JB-2. What Ukraine needs. With modern LW materials, better aiming tech, swept wings & reducing the warhead by 70% you get a cheap cruise missile (cheaper than Shahed) w/ 250kg warhead & 1200km range.
Measure ULA works much the same. If I sell a $4 million mansion, I pay no fees. If I sell a $10 million, 40-unit apartment complex (average cost $250k/unit), I must pay the city $200k. Measure ULA is anti-affordability.
This under-construction 7-bedroom, $14mm mansion did not have to pay any affordable housing fee. If you built a five-unit apartment of the same size, it'd need to pay a $360,000 affordable housing fee. How do five small homes neg. impact affordability more than one mansion?
Laws change, housing gets built: Santa Monica edition.
So far this year, Santa Monica has approved five apartment projects with a total of 903 homes. Here are the details:
This is what mass upzoning will create in most of America. Wood-framed 2-3 story townhomes & multiplexes with 1-2 parking spaces per unit. Theyโre not even out of scale from the other homes, but they provide vital affordable housing (especially for young families & seniors).
End of 2023, I stopped acquiring land for duplexes in Houston The secret was out and saw a ton of supply coming (probably shouldnโt of tweeted about it so much..) These two fourplexes are in the rough-in stage Theyโll be 2/2.5 each unit (925sqft) with one parking space each
Everyoneโs citing different reasons for Kansas Cityโs public grocery store failing, but few realize itโs simply because there are already 2 grocers in this neighborhood, which has a declining population. There are simply not enough customers, & nobody is desperate for a grocer.
I really think local governments, in particular, should try to focus on the fundamentals of delivering necessary public services rather than trying to think up new problems to take on. washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/07โฆ

Honest question: why arenโt pulsejet engines used to power modern one-way attack drones? Theyโre incredibly cheap & simple to make and boast a high power to weight ratio. Sure theyโre loud and have a high heat signature, but drones arenโt meant to be stealthy anyways.

The EU needs to increase R&D spending, not defense spending. There, I said it. Nothing wrong with EU countries spending 1.5% of their GDP on defense - they face no credible threats, and the money would be better spent on things thatโll boost their economy.
The U.S. needs a better model for new housing than 5-over-1s. Culdesac Tempe is a blueprint for truly walkable development that meets the urgent need for more housing without adding traffic or sprawling our cities even more.
5-over-1s have an authenticity problem. They often sprawl across entire blocks, fake looking materials, and use vertical material shifts to mask their scale. Our brains recognize authentic buildings instantly and that recognition canโt be faked.
