Glad to have this work out in eLife! The message remains the same, but with added comparisons to UNTB predictions. Thanks to the reviewers for helpful comments. Feel free to reach out with qs/comments! elifesciences.org/articles/89650
I'm happy to share some recent work from @jacrickets and myself! Here we worked to determine how coarse-graining microbial communities using phylogenetic and taxonomic information alters macroecological patterns within and between scales 1/13 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Join us tomorrow 3rd December 2-5pm CET ONLINE to hear all about Physics Without Frontiers and from some of our inspirational leaders from around the world helping to build the next generation of scientists! indico.ictp.it/event/10900/
Fun project working with @myphysicsvoyage and David! In a nutshell -- in eco-evo contexts, different types of mutational processes can drive different qualitative behavior, including pattern formation a la Turing. Check out the preprint if this sounds interesting to you!
Thrilled to share our new preprint with Stephen Martis (@stephen_martis) and David Schwab (CUNY)! We show how the method of mutation drives eco-evolutionary dynamics, shaping trait-space patterning via nonreciprocal interactions. Just the beginning of exploring this rich model!

I’m taking an indefinite break from twitter (now X) because of musk’s actions at the inauguration. You can find me under the same username on bluesky.
How do microbial communities assemble during precancer & cancer evolution? Excited to share our new preprint on modeling of microbial evolution in Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma! 🦠 Led by PhD student Caitlin Guccione biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #barretts #mathonco
Deadline for the call for PWF applications has been extended until 31st January 2025! Get your application together and work with us to help build the next generation of scientists! ictp.it/home/physics-w…
Resource competition can lead to instabilities and potentially catastrophes. How can we identify the critical transition for a massive system precisely?
Applying #physics concepts to #ecology shows that ecosystems become unstable when species compete for resources within the same niche. The work illustrates how even the simplest frameworks can show the full range of ecosystem dynamics. Read the paper: go.aps.org/3DLN7X4
Out just in time for my last days @Caltech pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
Great school one collective behavior in memory of Alma Dal Co next Sept in Venice. Terrific lineup of speakers almadalcoschool.github.io Application deadline Feb 2025, travel grants available!
New paper from the lab. The brilliant @norapyenson led a multi-lab collaboration to investigate the consistent formation of stable phage communities infecting a single clonal host population. She explains the gist of it beautifully in the quoted thread. Congrats Nora et al
Is it “winner-takes all” when the simplest living things compete? Check out my fresh publication on phage coexistence in Science and a thread below🧵 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
Very last day to apply to the Spring College in the Physics of Complex Systems indico.ictp.it/event/10821 This is a intensive 4-week program, perfect for master / PhD students. No fee for everyone and travel grants for students from selected countries available 🔴 DEADLINE TODAY 🔴
As a predator, would you prefer fewer or more competitors? Plot twist: it depends on your prey! Our @PNASNews study shows ecosystem stability isn't about having more or fewer species - it's about the diversity gap between predators and prey. Nature keeps surprising us! 🦊🐰
Renormalization is one of the few parts of QFT that is fully mathematically rigorous. In fact, it was used by Hardy and Littlewood to assign finite values to divergent series in number theory long before the physicists got there. See, for instance, zeta function regularization.
Physicist: "So here we just go ahead and subtract infinity from this calculation..." Mathematician: "Wait, that's illegal." Physicist: "Don't worry, it's got good vibes, sir." Mathematician: "I... can't even right now..." Physicist: "We call this trick.. renormalization."
Excited to share our new paper in Physical Review Research: "Stochastic trade-offs and the emergence of diversification in E. coli evolution experiments"! 🌱 We explore how stochasticity in mutation trader-offs evolutionary branching. Check it out: journals.aps.org/prresearch/a... 1/3
A dream come true: in 2004 I started thinking about counting microstates to predict gene expression with @JKondev Rob Phillips @HernanGGarcia. 20 years later we can measure them: nature.com/articles/s4158… Thank you @WJGreenleaf @bgrdoughty @MichaelaThinks Julia and all co-authors!
Back in Trieste after an incredible 3 weeks in Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺 co-instructing ICTP’s Hands-On Quant Bio School. The students did an amazing job maintaining 3D-printed chemostats in the face of a hurricane, power blackouts, and an earthquake More info👇 indico.ictp.it/event/10517/ov…

I am Vineland’s strongest defender. Do NOT come at me with DFW or Bloom quotes saying it’s the greatest literary tragedy of our time etc. I will make you look like an absolute fool.
🚨 Job Alert! 🚨 Join the UC Berkeley Physics Department! We’re hiring an Assistant Professor in soft condensed matter (broadly defined). Both experimentalists and theorists are encouraged to apply! aprecruit.berkeley.edu/JPF04653
