The commercial fishing industry kills at least 38 MILLION tonnes of wildlife each year 'by accident' & has done so for decades. 🎣 #Bycatch goes unpunished & reflects a total disregard for marine life by governments, policymakers & the fishing industry. blueplanetsociety.org/bycatch-crisis…
Humpback whales now migrate south weeks earlier as ocean warms. "Acoustic and visual surveys show the peak of the southern migration in 2003 was in October, but by 2024, it was in the middle of September" Prof Rebecca Dunlop, University of Queensland phys.org/news/2025-07-h…
How Vancouver's urban orcas create connections and community among followers. The return of orcas, humpbacks & other marine mammals follows the end of commercial whaling, along with the wind-down of large-scale seal culls. piquenewsmagazine.com/national-news/…
Taiwanese white dolphin population (Taiwan's only endemic cetacean) has dropped to 40-50, and 60% of them are suffering from injuries. The rapid decline of the critically endangered species is due to development projects & fishing along Taiwan's coast. focustaiwan.tw/society/202507…

The Faroese don’t want you to see the true scale of Grind slaughter. This footage was taken by @SeaShepherdFran after the latest Grind where over 115 pilot whales were murdered plus at least 15 fetuses and calves torn from their mothers and hidden away, ready to be dumped.
Rethinking Marine Protected Areas – why current practices are failing ❌ We're told that 30% of the ocean 🌊 will be protected by 2030. But only 8.4% of our blue planet is protected and just 2.8% is effectively protected. ✊Real change is needed #30x30 blueplanetsociety.org/rethinking-mar…
Will #SharkWeek2025 🦈portray sharks as vital ecosystem engineers or bloodthirsty killers?🩸 The media’s obsession with shark attacks fuels fear, not protection. We look at how the media's negative portrayal of sharks has contributed to their slaughter: blueplanetsociety.org/manufacturing-…
ORCAS!!! Last week we witnessed this amazing scene as we watched the '65s' Orcas hunting right beneath us as we stood on the cliffs at Kirkabister in the east Mainland, Shetland. Incredible! @Seasaver @whalesorg @kasmunro @Britnatureguide @NLFerries @Mammal_Society @mcsuk…
“Huge numbers” of sharks seen circling remote island deep in Pacific Ocean. 🦈 The incredible footage was captured in an enormous marine protected area, which allows sharks to thrive and keep the ocean healthy. discoverwildlife.com/animal-facts/m…
🦈 Manufacturing Monsters. How Hollywood Demonised Sharks. The fear of sharks was fuelled by Benchley’s novel, Jaws & perpetuated by Spielberg’s film + media negativity. We examine how the negative portrayal of sharks has contributed to their slaughter. blueplanetsociety.org/manufacturing-…
My friend Coral, a young goliath grouper, resident to a reef in the Florida Keys. There were once countless groupers here, of all different species. They’ve been hunted nearly to extinction. Like the few living coral formations on her reef, she survives here in defiance of us.
Blue sharks can change their colour like a chameleon, according to a new study. 🦈 The study, presented at the Society for Experimental Biology conference, reveals tiny nanostructures in the skin of the blue shark that produce their colouration. the-independent.com/news/science/b…
A man has been bitten after catching a sandbar shark on a Florida beach. Our thoughts go out to the shark 🦈. We wish this essential ecosystem engineer a speedy recovery & hope the injuries are not too serious, assuming the shark survived this ordeal.🪝 mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/m…
