The movie clearly justifies the change through the subplot with Johnny. He would've reacted so entirely differently if that was a man, and I don't know if he would've cared enough to translate what she said to him without the cover of flirting with her.

it's genuinely insane how loyal fantastic four is to its source material and the work of writers before it. even moments that weren't directly pulled from the comics had direct inspirations that i knew immediately. LIKE THIS PAGE WAS ABSOLUTELY INFLUENCE FOR THE MOVIE.
