A new 5% visitor tax for Glasgow. Visitors already pay VAT, fuel duty, air travel tax and businesses obviously pass on their business rates and other tax expenses. When will these new taxes stop?
Glasgow City Councillors have approved a 5% #VisitorLevy starting in January 2027. 26% direct tax on tourism with VAT, VL, and VAT on VL. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
It is not just businesses being #TaxedOut its customers too. Visitor levies have an admin burden and cost to businesses too but measures like this make us less competitive as a tourism market - and we are already 139th out of 141 countries

Every £1 of #VisitorLevy is £1 less spent in local shops, cafes, pubs, attractions etc. #TaxedOut
For every £1-5 per night a visitor has to spend on a tourism tax that is less they have to spend in local shops, cafes and pubs. Or worse, they choose to stay elsewhere and the area loses out as spend is displaced. You only have to look at the Taylor Swift uplift at Wembley
Thank you for your support - good to have colleagues across Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland backing the team
We wholly support the @UKHofficial “#TaxedOut” campaign. See below for how to get behind it and try to make politicians understand that we are being #TaxedOut already. NOT the time for another tax (#VisitorLevy). Reduce VAT, business rates, NICs…
If you want to get involved and tell your MP, your customers, your friends or X we are being #TaxedOut - everything you need is here. Spread and share ukhospitality.org.uk/campaigns/taxe… via @ukhofficial

Not the time to introduce yet another tax on a crucial industry & services ‘export’: #VisitorLevy
Was able to highlight that hospitality is most highly taxed segment of economy - paying 75% of profit back to govt - and our consumers are the most highly taxed in Europe with almost half the price they pay being tax - without a lower VAT rate. We’re in danger of being #TaxedOut
Weakening economy. Inflation. UK already 113th/119 countries for ‘tourism price competitiveness’ [WEF]. Not the time to introduce yet another tax on a crucial industry & services ‘export’: #VisitorLevy Pause & think again, @Ivan_McKee
The outlook for the Scottish and UK economies has weakened, with growth now expected to remain sluggish through the rest of 2025. Read more in our latest Economic Commentary: buff.ly/IdczXk1
You are 100% right! @UKHospKate
You cannot tax your way to growth
YES: Govts only think of each individual measure, not of the AGGREGATE effect of many burdens combined - especially on the smallest businesses. Our sector has suffered many new costs & much new red tape across many fronts since Covid. Time to STOP regulating & start deregulating
Thought prompted by this Governments too often think about regulation as discrete tradeoffs. But it’s about aggregate impact. You introduce 100 individually logical regs, but the aggregate effect would never pass an impact assessment. A sort of regulatory Metcalfe’s law.
While STA CEO, Marc Crothall MBE, welcomed the news that international visits to Scotland surged by 10% to a record 4.4 million trips in 2024, with visitor spend in the local economy rising by 7% to £3.9 billion, he flagged 👇 (1/4)
Rising operating costs,, reduced profitability, regulatory burdens and declining domestic overnight stays and spend are all taking their toll. The reality is that too many businesses are still struggling to break even heraldscotland.com/news/25263104.…
