Happy to be awarded @ERC_Research Advanced grant to work on the mechanisms of molecular machines from respiratory chain! Potential post-docs, especially if interested in the development and application of time-resolved cryoEM or experienced in cryoET are welcome to contact me.
It’s amazing how a publication in Nature makes some people feel entitled to grandiose opinions.
The current AI / AGI hype is so outrageous that in a few months this will be compared to FTX from a technology, regulation, societal impact point of view. It’s nothing more than a religion born from a chat bot.
Happy to share new preprint from our collaboration with Peter Nixon group from Imperial College. New insights into Photosystem II assembly/disassembly. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
📢 The Microscopy Conference MC 2025 will take place from 31.8-4.9. in Karlsruhe, Germany. If you have an exciting new story to present please consider to apply to our session ""Cryo-EM and image analysis of macromolecules and molecular assemblies”. microscopy-conference.de
Árbol del Tule, Montezuma cypress near Oaxaca in Mexico is amazing. It is the biggest tree in the world by trunk width (14 m diameter). How just a few green needles maintain this tree over 2000 years is a mystery to me.

@ISTAustria welcomes renowned scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur Alex Bronstein as a faculty member! After a year as a Visiting Professor, he joins us to advance machine vision, #MachineLearning in life sciences—and even #AI in music! Read more 🔗 bit.ly/48uOcgX
It was great to give a talk at #CSMito2024 and see exciting developments in mitochondrial medicine. Hopefully the new mitoworld.org initiative will bring more public attention to mitochondria beyond the “powerhouse of the cell” notion.
Fantastic news, congratulations! We all use AlphaFold by now, and protein design is becoming mainstream. New questions can now be explored- how this complex might look like? Structures still need to be solved experimentally, but this is much faster now with the help of AlphaFold.
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”

This can happen if the square is overblotted, I.e. dried up. See examples in our iScience 2021 paper.

Happy to see this work out. With fantastic former post-doc @vercellino_ire we resolve the controversy on SCAF1 factor presence in respirasomes. It is not present in the “canonical” form, but is attaching extra CIV to CIII in novel CS-respirasome. nature.com/articles/s4159…
Many thanks to Newsflix journalists for an interview in connection with Schrödinger prize. (It is in German so can be opened in Chrome for translation). newsflix.at/s/loesungen-fu…
Happy to receive Schrödinger prize from Austrian Academy of Sciences. Especially honoured because it was Schrödinger’s book “What is life” which back in school inspired me to study biophysics later at university. Festive hall of Academy looks amazing!

Waiting and praying for Quantifoil order to arrive. (C) JÖRG IMMENDORFF

Great to attend with almost entire group Vienna cryo-EM symposium.

I wonder why this keeps happening in CS despite gold standard separation? Automask effects sure, but still …

Happy to be one of the recipients of #niederösterreich science prizes 2023. It is great that government of Lower Austria, where ISTA is located, cares so much about science.

Glad to see the results of this very productive collaboration in print. One of the remaining secrets of PSII assembly revealed, more to follow. As usual, fantastic cryoEM work from @vercellino_ire ! nature.com/articles/s4146…
