On Dhana's Ayodhya inscription. x.com/Jayvtweets/sta…
Last year when I was visiting Ayodhya, I came across this inscription. The Sadhus of Shri Udasin Rishi Ashram had told me about it. When I saw this inscription, I could see it was in Brahmi.
Saw the Hathibada inscription in Udaipur Government Museum. This, along with the Dhana inscription of Ayodhya, are the two oldest Sanskrit inscriptions that we are currently aware of. And yes, I’ve now seen them both up close!
Got this last week and finished it in 5 evenings. Absolutely engrossing and packed with information. The personal stories were incredible and there a lot of 'I didn't know that' moments. Excellent read
Thank you!
Congratulations, @SamDalrymple123 on this amazing book. Especially your work on the first two partitions involving Burma and the Arab princely states, the stories that you have dug up about the Qu’aiti sultanate and its links with Hyderabad, about Aden and about the Burmese…
I read your whole article on Substack. Absolutely brilliant, and I liked how you bought the various groups to life eg Druids as keepers of sacred groves.
Read my latest substack for the story of Britain's Africa Governor and the Roman Berbers from modern Algeria who colonized Scotland.
I learnt about the Algerians who colonized Scotland and Britain's first African Governor, Quintus Urbicus Lollicus, who is buried near modern Constantine in Algieria.
Urbicus oversaw the construction of the Antonine Wall, a turf and timber fortification that stretched across the Forth-Clyde isthmus.

this is what i like about vast empires, they're so cosmopolitan and lead to so many wacky interactions and alliances

for me too, thank you for this - absolutely fascinating. 'For me, this is one of the most exciting and unexpected moments in British history because Quintus Lollicus Urbicus was Britain's first - and to my knowledge only - African ruler'
