Driving to Grand Rapids this month, I was struck how the entire corridor from Chicago up through Holland is an uninterrupted wall of vice billboards. Pot, booze, trial lawyers, fireworks, casinos, erotic shops, show girls. Solid wave of it, for your bored preteens to stare at.

Excellent point about the uselessness of those pseudo-scientific democracy indices that are always getting quoted.
This kind of electoral manipulation is fun because in real terms it absolutely blows tiny things like voter ID or polling station consolidations out of the water. But it'll never be coded as such and no one would claim it's 'backsliding.'
