I’m proud to have sponsored the bill to end cash bail. In fact we’re the only state to use a safety standard for pretrial detention. It’s wild to think of all the misinformation that was spread after the bill’s passage. Anyway, seems like things are going well:
Murder is down 32% this year and is the lowest in over a decade so far and 3rd lowest since at least 1991 (realistically since 1965 or so). Robbery down 33%. Lowest since at least 2001. You may want to update yourself instead of assuming we are still like a few years ago.
Growing up with a family member in the trades, I know the power of a union card. In Springfield, I’ve worked with the labor movement to pass policies that make life better for workers. Now, I’m grateful to have earned @InsulatorsUnion Local 17’s support!

From SNAP to Medicaid cuts, this Republican budget bill is going to cause people in our communities real pain. And for what? To cover the costs of making the rich richer. These people should never have been in a position to make decisions about our lives. chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/202…
Last night I was honored to stand with members of the joint Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation to award $150,000 in scholarships to 150 students from all across Illinois. (1/2)
The fight for clean air, clean water, and for environmental protections has been going on for decades and the Trump administration and his allies are setting us back.
Enough is enough. Our residents deserve comfort, dignity and security. Our residents deserve to have their voices heard. Our residents deserve clean air.
For far too long, residents of Vet’s Park have reported strong odors and persistent air pollution that threaten their health, quality of life and basic dignity. Today, I joined them at a press conference to say enough is enough.
When I was a community organizer just getting started in the State Senate, Sen. Mattie Hunter took the time to help me learn and grow as a leader in the Black Caucus. I’m so grateful for her guidance and to have her support in this campaign.

For the last year, I’ve been working with the wonderful women at @RPCoalition to pass the Reverend Jesse Jackson Sr. Young Voter Empowerment Law. This law seeks to expand civic engagement among Illinois youth as the leave high school. actionnetwork.org/letters/please…

To see this kind of enthusiasm fueling our campaign in just the first 6 weeks is humbling. This is the grassroots energy we will need as we build a big, broad coalition to take on Donald Trump and his wrecking crew in Congress. We are fired up and feeling the momentum.
