Principal Researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience at @KarolinskaInst. Interested in consciousness, visual & body perception, self, emotion, & psychopathology.
In our new @NatureComms paper, we investigate the visual system's priorities for extracting meaningful information from faces and bringing it to conscious awareness. We use a new tachistoscope that enables visual presentations as short as 0.002 ms: nature.com/articles/s4146… (🧵👇)
Finally published: “Explosive neural networks via higher-order interactions in curved statistical manifolds” nature.com/articles/s4146… Enhancing the capabilities of recurrent neural networks by deforming their geometry!
Had a blast yesterday in our @sxsw "Creativity & Consciousness" panel @sxswlndn, with Deirdre Parsons (@LynchFoundation, @davidlynchuk), Susie Pearl (@susie_pearl ), Nigel Barlow (@Nigelmaybarlow), and Lucie Cave (@luciecave).
I am opening one PhD position at the Neuroscience Center @HiLIFE_helsinki, focusing on large-scale neural interactions in perception and prediction (ECoG/LFPs/MEG) across human and non-human primates using comp. modeling and information theory. Contact: helsinki.fi/en/hilife-hels…
He claims he wants to make his country great again, yet all he does is drive it deeper into poverty and regression: Trump proposes unprecedented budget cuts to US science nature.com/articles/d4158…
Happy to share our new article published in Scientific Reports with Henrik Ehrsson @BrainSelf ! We characterize the functional role of the sense of bodily self in the interplay between fear and threat proximity. nature.com/articles/s4159…
Feeling fear through a fake body? Our new study, led by @RyuOhata, shows that illusory body ownership amplifies subjective fear in response to nearby fear-relevant animals (spiders) and increases fear of safety-margin violations. nature.com/articles/s4159…
Dear colleagues in visual perception research, I have a quick question for you! We’re looking to purchase a head-mounted display (HMD) that’s compatible with EEG—we’re using a 128-electrode Biosemi system. Do you have any recommendations for products that might suit us? Thanks!
Is interoceptive sensing unified across internal organs? 🫀🫁 Our high-powered psychophysical study (N=241) suggests not, with Bayesian evidence indicating interoceptive processes are largely modality-specific. 🔗 Read here: osf.io/preprints/psya…
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Brain, Body, and Self Lab at Karolinska Institutet. For details, see the link below. Application deadline: March 17 ki.varbi.com/what:job/jobID…
Today at 16:00 (CET), Axel Cleeremans (@axelcleeremans ) will present at our Cognitive Neuroscience Seminars on his lab's work on the value of consciousness. Find the relevant information (e.g., Zoom link) below. We're excited to have you, Axel! news.ki.se/calendar/cogni…
A must-read for all those into neural dynamics and the functional role of neural oscillations. Here, @canalesjohnson et al. convincingly show that gamma oscillations may not have the functional role that many researchers in the field believe them to have.
1/8 Very happy to share our latest pre-print entitled "Broadband synergy versus oscillatory redundancy in the visual cortex". A cross-species project led by the great Louis Roberts, with @dora_hermes, @martin_a_vinck, et al. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Are you interested in how we experience our body as our own and the brain mechanisms behind it? Check out our project's preprint, led by @DAngeloMariano , and its fascinating findings! 👇
In a new preprint we demonstrated that the frequency of alpha oscillations plays a crucial role in binding self-related sensory information into a coherent perceptual experience of one’s body and distinguishing this bodily self from external sensory events biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Our paper on how people form self-beliefs about their performance in relation to transdiagnostic anxiety and depression symptoms now out in @NatureComms @smfleming @docqhuys @MPC_CompPsych @UCPH_Research nature.com/articles/s4146…
We are recruiting a new postdoc to the Brain, Body, and Self Lab at Karolinska Institutet. Check out the link for more information. ki.varbi.com/what:job/jobID…
New paper out by the awesome Luzi Xu! We asked whether mere exposure to (currently disregarded) visual objects, expedites encoding of these objects into memory when we select them for action later. Our data show that we passively build up memory traces for (non-selected) items.
🚨New paper out in JEP:HPP with @AndreSahakian @SuryaGayet Chris Paffen @SvanderStigchel!In this study, we asked whether memory traces are formed for items that have not yet been selected for immediate action, while we are actively sampling targets for imminent action.
What is the relationship between conscious awareness and unconscious processing in the multisensory perception of our own bodies? In our new preprint, led by @Renzo_Lanfranco, we investigated this question—and the findings surprised us! Link to preprint and thread below. #Science…
How does the perception of our bodily self arise in our experience, and to what extent do we process body ownership information unconsciously? In a new study (preprint), we found body ownership information processing cannot occur without awareness. 0/14👇doi.org/10.31234/osf.i…
