Brain, Body, and Self Lab
@BrainSelf
We study the sense of self, body representation, and the human brain. Based at Karolinska Institutet, led by Henrik Ehrsson.
Octopuses feel the rubber hand illusion—or at least their behaviour suggests they do. science.org/content/articl…
New study out in iScience, led by @coppi_sara: During the rubber hand illusion, pain is mislocalized toward the rubber hand, just like touch and proprioception. This nociceptive drift reveals how pain, like other senses, is integrated into the bodily self. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40546968/

Feeling fear through a fake body? Our new study, led by @RyuOhata, shows that illusory body ownership amplifies subjective fear in response to nearby fear-relevant animals (spiders) and increases fear of safety-margin violations. nature.com/articles/s4159…
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Brain, Body, and Self Lab at Karolinska Institutet. For details, see the link below. Application deadline: March 17 ki.varbi.com/what:job/jobID…
New preprint exploring the role of alpha oscillations in integrating self-related sensory information and distinguishing the bodily self from external events. See link and thread below. Led by @DAngeloMariano
In a new preprint we demonstrated that the frequency of alpha oscillations plays a crucial role in binding self-related sensory information into a coherent perceptual experience of one’s body and distinguishing this bodily self from external sensory events biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
We are recruiting a new postdoc to the Brain, Body, and Self Lab at Karolinska Institutet. Check out the link for more information. ki.varbi.com/what:job/jobID…
What is the relationship between conscious awareness and unconscious processing in the multisensory perception of our own bodies? In our new preprint, led by @Renzo_Lanfranco, we investigated this question—and the findings surprised us! Link to preprint and thread below. #Science…
How does the perception of our bodily self arise in our experience, and to what extent do we process body ownership information unconsciously? In a new study (preprint), we found body ownership information processing cannot occur without awareness. 0/14👇doi.org/10.31234/osf.i…

Congratulations to Demis Hassabis on winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, alongside David Baker and John M. Jumper! A remarkable achievement in advancing science.
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”
Using laser pain to induce a bodily illusion – featured on the front cover of PAIN, with commentary. Study led by @coppi_sara journals.lww.com/pain/fulltext/…

According to a new study in the journal PAIN, the feeling of owning our bodies is created by combining information from multiple senses, such as nociceptive pain, vision, and proprioception. Research by @coppi_sara et al. journals.lww.com/pain/fulltext/…
When complex information, such as faces, enters our eyes, the brain extracts attributes through a series of steps, with integrated information emerging alongside conscious awareness, according to a study in @NatureComms. Research @Renzo_Lanfranco nature.com/articles/s4146…
In our new @NatureComms paper, we investigate the visual system's priorities for extracting meaningful information from faces and bringing it to conscious awareness. We use a new tachistoscope that enables visual presentations as short as 0.002 ms: nature.com/articles/s4146… (🧵👇)
20 years ago, Ehrsson, Spence, & @Dick_retired published a landmark study showing how the premotor and parietal cortex drive the sense of body ownership through multisensory integration in the rubber hand illusion. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Temporal structure of experience etched on firing of human hippocampal-entorhinal neurons to serve memory & prediction. See our study @Nature at @UCLANsgy, great work by lead author @PTacikowski with @GuldamlaKalendr & @DavideCili support @NIH_NINDS. nature.com/articles/s4158…
We are so glad to be on the cover of @IASPpain! Read our new discovery published with @BrainSelf and Karin Jensen!
The cover of #PAIN’s October issue depicts the nociceptive rubber hand illusion paradigm, which induces a perceptual feeling that a prosthetic hand is one’s own limb. Illustration by @mattias_karlen. See @coppi_sara et al.’s article bit.ly/47CNuOw #painawarenessmonth
New paper alert! 📢 Blind individuals’ enhanced ability to sense their own heartbeat is related to the thickness of their occipital cortex: academic.oup.com/cercor/article…. Co-led by @annalena_stroh and me, together with @maksym_korczyk, @lauracrucianel1, @BrainSelf, & Marcin Szwed.
