OTD 26/7/44 #RememberRCN -SS Fort McPherson (Wartime Merchant Shipping Ltd, Canada) damaged by German Glider Bomb at Victoria Dock, London, while undergoing repairs from attack by German aircraft on 11 June 1944 in the English Channel.

#OTD 26/7/1957 #RememberRCN -Both of HMCS LABRADOR's Bell HTL-4 Helicopters crash on a 2400 ft cliff near Peter Point in York Sound. Both aircrew were uninjured & had to wait for weather to improve the next day for rescue by LABRADOR's HUP-3 helicopter.




#OTD 26/7/1944 #RememberRCN -HMCS ALBERNI successfully shoots down a German Junkers 88 off the coast of France. The aircraft was at sea level, when ALBERNI opened up with her Oerlikons & aft pom-pom, scoring several hits & crashing into the sea 100 yards off the corvettes bow.

#OTD 26/7/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCShips HAMILTON and AGASSIZ rescue 81 survivors from MV Lochkatrine, torpedoed by U-552 during the Battle for Convoy ON-115 east of Cape Race.


#OTD 26/7/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS DAUPHIN & HMS BURNHAM while rescuing 45 survivors from torpedoed MV Empire Rainbow (British) gain an ASDIC contact with U704 & attacked with Depth Charges, damaging the U-boat & forcing U704 to lose contact with convoy ON-113.

#OTD 26/7/1918 #RememberRCN -U140 is the third German U-Boat to enter Canadian waters in #WWI, announcing its arrival in a running gun battle with British steamer SS Melitia just south of Newfoundland. The merchantman was too fast for the submarine and made good her escape.

#OTD 26/7/1881 #RememberRCN -HMS Charybdis arrives at Saint John, New Brunswick. The steam corvette is the first attempt to create a Canadian Naval Service. She is found to be too worn out even for training purposes and returned to the Royal Navy.

#OTD 25/7/1942 #RememberRCN -MV Lucille M (Frederick Sutherland, Yarmouth NS) shelled by U89 off Cape Sable. Crew of 11 abandoned ship, with 4 wounded. For 45 minutes, U89 fired 35 rounds into the schooner. Survivors reported hearing from the U-Boat, "The damn thing won't sink!"

#OTD 25/7/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS BRANDON (1st) picks up sailors from British merchant ships SS Broompark & MV British Merit having abandoned ship after both were damaged by torpedoes from U-552 during attack on convoy ON-113, then escorts both ships to St. John's. @HMCSBrandon

#OTD 24/7/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS ST.CROIX while escorting convoy ON-113, sights U90 on the surface and makes four quick, successive depth charge attacks. Sinking the German U-Boat in the north Atlantic, east of Newfoundland.

#OTD 24/7/1942 #RememberRCN -Battle for Convoy ON-113 begins off Newfoundland. Convoy escorted by HMCShips ST. CROIX, BRANDON, DAUPHIN, DRUMHELLER & HMS BURHAM, POLYANTHUS. Over seven days, 7 U-boats will sink 3 merchant ships & damage 1. Two U-boats are sunk & 1 damaged.

#OTD 23/7/1954 #RememberRCN -HMCS LABRADOR departs Halifax on its 1st voyage to Canada's Arctic. Making history as the only naval icebreaker in the Commonwealth, 1st small warship to embark helicopters & later 1st warship to circumnavigate North America thru Northwest Passage.
