I’m thrilled to announce that I will start as a presidential assistant professor in Neuroscience at the City U of Hong Kong in Jan 2026! I have RA, PhD, and postdoc positions available! Come work with me on neural network models/experiments on human memory! RT appreciated! (1/5)
Today we open-sourced a new project for developing behavioral experiments online. It is called Smile. Announcement of v0.1.0: todd.gureckislab.org/2025/07/22/s... Smile has been used internally in my lab for several years and has substantially increased our productivity.
Today @NatureHumBehav published a paper on how machine learning is helping reveal what makes economic games complex for people. Read our new blog post breaking down the research from paper author @JQ_Zhu: bit.ly/4k8bops
Fantastic work by our (now former) lab manager Liv Christiano. We assess the test-retest reliability of OPM and compare it to fMRI and iEEG. 🧠📄🧵bsky.app/profile/olivia… biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
I threw together a short paper outlining our tool Diffusion Explorer. Diffusion Explorer allows you to learn about the geometric properties of diffusion and flow based generative models with interactive animation.
Our new study in @NatComputSci, led by Haibao Wang, presents a neural code converter aligning brain activity across individuals & scanners without shared stimuli by minimizing content loss, paving the way for scalable decoding and cross-site data analysis. nature.com/articles/s4358…

New review on computational approaches to studying human planning out now in @TrendsCognSci! Really enjoyed having the opportunity to write something broader about the field with the help of @evanrussek @marcelomattar @weijima01 and @cocosci_lab cell.com/trends/cogniti…
Can't wait to read this paper! Congrats! Jamal!
Music is an incredibly powerful retrieval cue. What is the neural basis of music-evoked memory reactivation? And how does this reactivation relate to later memory? In our new study, we used Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to find out. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Using computational modeling and EEG the study suggests several metacognitive states correlate with rational adjustments in behaviour; this might benefit steering behaviour towards optimality. nature.com/articles/s4427…
Thank you for the consistent support from @marcelomattar, Marcus @NeuroTheoryUCSD, and all my friends and colleagues!
Thrilled to see our TinyRNN paper in @nature! We show how tiny RNNs predict choices of individual subjects accurately while staying fully interpretable. This approach can transform how we model cognitive processes in both healthy and disordered decisions. doi.org/10.1038/s41586…
Abstract rule learning promotes cognitive flexibility in complex environments across species nature.com/articles/s4146… #neuroscience
Humans and animals can rapidly learn in new environments. What computations support this? We study the mechanisms of in-context reinforcement learning in transformers, and propose how episodic memory can support rapid learning. Work w/ @KanakaRajanPhD: arxiv.org/abs/2506.19686
New preprint: osf.io/preprints/psya… Been thinking a lot lately about how to achieve a generalized theory of memory integrating our knowledge from both traditional (e.g., random word lists) and naturalistic memory experiments (e.g., movies, narratives). Feedback is very welcome!
Using in silico neuroscience, Gifford et al. developed a neural control algorithm to modulate the representational relationships between visual cortical areas, revealinghow these areas jointly represent the world as an interconnected network. #NeuroAI nature.com/articles/s4156…
There are many KV cache-reduction methods, but a fair comparison is challenging. We propose a new unified metric called “critical KV footprint”. We compare existing methods and propose a new one - PruLong, which “prunes” certain attn heads to only look at local tokens. 1/7
Happy to have concluded another iteration of our 5-day open LLMs course, together with @ZakASHussain. If you are interested in LLMs for behavioral and social sciences, check out our... Tutorial: doi.org/10.3758/s13428… Open materials: github.com/zak-Hussain/LL…

Thrilled to announce I’ll be joining @PurdueCS as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2026! My lab will work on AI thought partners, machines that think with people rather than instead of people – I'll be recruiting PhD students this upcoming cycle so reach out & apply if interested!
