You need to be a subject matter expert mainly.. a very good one at that.. AI wouldn't give you the deepest intuition.. mainly help you with quick prototyping and boilerplate.. In applied mathematica fields it can't give you intuition.. because it's only a smart IR system atm..
I am not a coder, but from what I have understood about AI landscape; being decent in coding & having expertise in another subject matter like linguistics, psychology, arts will get you better returns than proper code for entry & mid-tier roles. I think CS+Something will be fine
