Karma is cause and effect. The thing is that sometimes the workings of karma manifest in a subtle way in which the effect can't be directly traced to its cause. But this has nothing to do with karma itself, but rather to the way we perceive reality and relate to it.

The root of the compulsive cycle of birth, death and rebirth lies in the fundamental ignorance of the mind which assumes appearances as perceived by the senses to be real and reacts to them with feelings of identification in regards to attachment or aversion.

The real reason behind the question is that I want to know how humans fit in this cosmic order. Is there a universally accepted code of rules and regulations within Sanātana Dharma that allows one to live within Ṛta, or does each Sampradaya decide what is right and wrong?
