Raising awareness for the understudied condition PSSD.
These are 2 separate issues: 1) "Do SSRIs alter fetal development & should the public be warned about this?" Yes & Yes. 2) "Should a specific woman continue her SSRI?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer & the decision is hers to make. Compassionate care & support are key.
"Can SSRI antidepressants affect the developing fetal brain?" Yes. "Should the public be warned about this?" Yes. "Should a specific patient take an SSRI during pregnancy?" This is a separate question. It requires compassionate care & counseling, & support for patient choices.
How do SSRI antidepressants impact the developing brain? This is an excellent Grand Rounds exploring this topic. "Revisiting the Safety of SSRI use during pregnancy: Are we causing more harm than good?" youtube.com/watch?v=NbMqE6…
"Up to about 20 to 25% of patients may have some sexual dysfunction associated as well" Dr. Kay Roussos-Ross, Director of the Perinatal Mood Disorders Program at @UFMedicine, gives an inaccurate overview of SSRI side effects at the @US_FDA Expert Panel on SSRIs and Pregnancy.
Q: Is prenatal SSRI exposure associated with changes on newborn EEGs (electroencephalograms)? A: Yes. At least 3 studies have shown this. #1. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC69… #2. frontiersin.org/journals/neuro… (1/2)
Outrageous
Are physicians still trained to tell their depressed patients that they have a chemical imbalance? Here's a recent flashcard preparing medical students for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination). Their answer is (C). The problem is...
Psychiatrists should exercise extreme caution when sampling their own wares.
They say SSRIs are “safe and effective.” I say: Try waking up every day in a fog you can’t name or escape. Try losing your identity for years. Try fighting a chemical storm your brain never asked for. Try living through the withdrawal. Try clawing your way out of a…
In wake of coroner's report on Thomas Kingston, another woman reports becoming suicidal on same/similar meds. Her complaint to NHS trust was rejected, she says: independent.co.uk/news/health/an…
If serotonin plays a crucial role in fetal development (which it does) & if SSRIs disrupt the serotonin system (which they do) then the SSRIs must alter fetal development - and the public should be warned. This point was not disputed at yesterday's panel.
"I think the PSSD folks—the Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction folks—have brought in more attention to that, the sort of chemical injury that we're seeing." @AdamUrato1, Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at MetroWest Medical Center, at the @US_FDA Expert Panel on SSRIs and Pregnancy.
Doubt many see this post, but we'll see. I have #PSSD. 7 yrs in. Severe case. Family saw my rapid decline in 18. I tried so hard to educate them, just gaslighted.Pointless. Only believed my DR's word. I just want to talk to anyone whos fighting the same battle Were all Warriors
Someone on my substack comments was told by her physician that SSRIs are “safer than tic tacs.” She’s 11 years into SSRI withdrawal having lost “my career, my marriage, my finances, for many years I was housebound.”
Mark: Are doctors supposed to report your drug-related symptoms to the FDA? Josef: Yes, but they never do, because it's additional paperwork. Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring (@taperclinic) discusses why the pharmacovigilance system misses many cases of iatrogenic syndromes, like PSSD.
Scientists know the system is broken. But hey, as long as the grant gets funded and the administration leaves them alone for the time being, it’s someone else’s problem.
Suppressing and blunting emotions disguised as mental healthcare is antihuman.
Another astounding aspect of the Kalfas review and its press release is its implicit plea to doctors to not inform patients about withdrawal effects for fear of inducing ‘nocebo’ effects. Not informing people about clear risks cannot be good practice.
SSRIs are linked to fetal heart defects. This new study shows serotonin receptor activity is critical for embryonic heart development. The authors: "[Our findings] underscore the potential teratogenic risks of serotonergic drugs..during pregnancy." onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/bd…
I went into academia to search for truth. I left learning how to write safe grants, avoid controversy, and serve bureaucrats.
I am glad you recognise PSSD and are keen to reduce it. I would be interested to see any psychiatric textbooks or teaching materials that mention it
Because he and Joanna continue to perpetuate this myth that there is an organized and intentional pushback to pssd. It's a well known side effect, it's been taught for more than a decade, and psychiatrists are of course interested in why it happens and how to reduce it.
