Medications & Pregnancy Video -Medications are synthetic chemical compounds. -Some can be used during pregnancy. -Chemicals do have consequences for moms & babies.
These are 2 separate issues: 1) "Do SSRIs alter fetal development & should the public be warned about this?" Yes & Yes. 2) "Should a specific woman continue her SSRI?" There's no one-size-fits-all answer & the decision is hers to make. Compassionate care & support are key.
"Can SSRI antidepressants affect the developing fetal brain?" Yes. "Should the public be warned about this?" Yes. "Should a specific patient take an SSRI during pregnancy?" This is a separate question. It requires compassionate care & counseling, & support for patient choices.
I never thought there'd be a day in which I'd be watching @DrMcFillin , @AdamUrato1 , @joannamoncrieff , @taperclinic , @LacasseJeffrey , and David Healy speak at the @US_FDA about the risks of taking SSRIs in pregnancy but here we are. Cheek-pinching moment. What a time of…
LIVESTREAMING NOW: FDA Expert Panel on Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Pregnancy
New study: Developing mice exposed to an SSRI (Prozac) show life-long brain changes. "These results reveal the..critical nature of serotonin signaling during perinatal life; [SSRIs] can have profound life-long consequences for cognitive development." nature.com/articles/s4146…
If serotonin plays a crucial role in fetal development (which it does) & if SSRIs disrupt the serotonin system (which they do) then the SSRIs must alter fetal development - and the public should be warned. This point was not disputed at yesterday's panel.
Thank you @DrMakaryFDA @TracyBethHoeg & FDA for hosting this panel on SSRIs and Pregnancy. It was an honor to participate.

Q: Is prenatal SSRI exposure linked to constipation (or other gut issues) in the children? A: Yes. -This has been shown in 3 human studies (below) - and mice studies as well. antonpottegaard.dk/publications/o… pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC77… bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Over 10% of American women of childbearing age take SSRIs, with about half continuing use during pregnancy. However, questions remain about efficacy during pregnancy and potential risks to mother and child. Join our expert roundtable THIS MONDAY, July 21 at 10 am for a…
SSRIs are linked to fetal heart defects. This new study shows serotonin receptor activity is critical for embryonic heart development. The authors: "[Our findings] underscore the potential teratogenic risks of serotonergic drugs..during pregnancy." onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/bd…
Approximately 5% of pregnant women take an SSRI for depression. But SSRI use during pregnancy has been linked in observational studies to birth defects, miscarriages, and neurological and behavioral challenges in childhood. On Monday, July 21 at 10 a.m. ET, we’ll be hosting an…
SSRIs appear to have direct chemical effects on the fetal brain/heart (neurocardiac) axis. Soon after a pregnant mom takes an SSRI, the baby's heart rate (HR) baseline increases, the HR variability ⬇️, & there are more HR decelerations (esp. with ⬆️ dose) frontiersin.org/journals/psych…

Thank you Commissioner Makary and Dr. Hoeg for inviting me to participate in this upcoming panel on SSRIs & Pregnancy. I look forward to the discussion.

SSRI antidepressants significantly increase the risk of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). This 2024 study showed a dose-dependent increased risk. High-dose SSRI users had a 24% risk of PPH. (Note: These were vaginal deliveries. PPH rates are ⬆️at C-Section) sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Users of SSRI antidepressants have strikingly lower levels of platelet serotonin. This study showed a 14-fold reduction in SSRI users (yes, fourteen-fold: 117 vs 1635 nmol/L.) SSRIs have dramatic chemical impacts on the body. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/00…
