Why do people deny or downplay Long Covid and refuse protection? The Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), widely used in health psychology, gives some answers. As a social psychologist, let me explain how our minds shape these reactions. 🧵 (1/16)
#LongCOVID patients with cognitive dysfunction underwent FDG PET scans and EEG tests which showed reduced brain metabolism and slowed electrical activity, especially in frontal regions linked to focus and memory. These findings help explain the neurological basis of "brain fog"…
A new study from Germany found that intravenous administration of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in mice led to neuroinflammation and accumulation of alpha-synuclein in brain regions associated with Parkinson’s disease. 1/
With HIV, dysautonomia is very common. Also, antiretroviral use has no link with dysautonomic symptoms. I wouldnt bet on effectiveness of antivirals and mabs for sars induced dysautonomia

French study shows that older age is a PROTECTIVE factor against long covid. This is a virus more dangerous for young people, contrary to popular belief. Study also confirms the more infections you have the higher the risk. nature.com/articles/s4385…
Paris researchers studied golden hamsters and found that SARS-CoV-2 can persist in the brainstem for 80 days, triggering gene changes linked to neurodegeneration and causing depression-like behavior, memory loss, and anxiety-like symptoms. nature.com/articles/s4146…
Our preprint: Neuroinflammation in #LongCovid is online! This group met during the community-driven event #UnitedtoFight last year. This publication in #NeuroCovid is just another example of how science works better when we listen to the community and work together with them! 1/3
Santiago de Compostela researchers analyzed blood from 65 long COVID patients and found persistent spike and nucleocapsid proteins plus suppressed immunoglobulins, suggesting ongoing viral presence and immune dysfunction as key drivers of symptoms. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
A new study from New Zealand found that over one-third of university students experienced measurable cognitive deficits—especially in executive function—up to 17 months after COVID-19 infection. Even in a young, healthy population, the impacts on brain function were objectively…
What do HIV and COVID have in common? A lot more than you'd expect. Both viruses target the same key neuronal protein - TDP-43 - involved in ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. And both viruses have evolved to silence a major immune alarm system. @dbdugger @RealCheckMarker
A new study on COVID-19’s cognitive impact shows: - 3-point IQ drop for recovered mild cases - 6-point IQ drop for Long COVID cases - 9-point IQ drop for ICU patients Reinfections may worsen the effect, adding a 2-point IQ hit...🧵
New study. Olympic athletes. Post-COVID outcomes. Researchers tracked 65 Olympic-caliber athletes from Germany’s National Olympic Training Center — not weekend warriors, but elite professionals at the top of their sport. Here’s what they found after confirmed SARS-CoV-2…
LONG COVID IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS 🚨40% of the undergrad students reported brain fog due to COVID-19. 🚨37 % of the undergraduates exhibited impaired cognition up to 17 months post-infection. 🚨Brain fog appeared to affect the distinct prefrontal haemodynamic patterns.
New #LongCovid study: “Detailed nailfold videocapillaroscopy analysis [found].. significant microvascular abnormalities, mainly capillary dilations & microhaemorrhages, in LC patients up to 18 months.. Patients w/o LC symptoms showed complete recovery” rmdopen.bmj.com/content/11/2/e…
Everything that defined me as a person is gone. I didn't know it was possible to lose that while I'm still alive. 😪 The fact that this is a possible experience is absolutely horrifying.
Stanford researchers studied 24 patients and found Long COVID POTS involves widespread autonomic dysfunction including rapid heart rate, heightened adrenaline response, nerve damage, and signs of synuclein protein buildup linked to neurodegeneration. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
#ApresJ20
