MEMPHIS — Jim Maxwell, who spent much of his career as a scout team and reserve quarterback, was thrust into action in Tennessee’s 10-7 win over Mississippi State in Memphis in 1971. He remained the starter, leading the Vols to seven-straight wins that season.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee walked off South Carolina in overtime, 23-20 after Casey Clausen’s 4-yard touchdown pass to James Banks at Neyland Stadium in 2003.
An SEC ruling that offseason forced road teams to wear white, and that’s what Tennessee wore in pregame. Then the Vols took the field before kickoff in white jerseys with orange shoulders for the first time. “We tried to get as much orange in it as possible,” one coach said.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Backed up to his own goal line, Phil Pierce led Tennessee on a 99-yard scoring drive to beat Florida, 20-13 at Florida Field in 1971. 🎥 @VolNetwork Archive

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee head coach Bill Battle was carried off of a rain-soaked Shields-Watkins Field on the shoulders of his players after the No. 9 Vols beat No. 11 Auburn, 21-0 in 1973. The win ended a three-game losing streak in the series.

MIAMI — Mark Jones pressured Brock Berlin and forced this Gibril Wilson interception to snuff out a Miami drive in Tennessee’s 10-6 win at the Orange Bowl in 2003.
New on Substack: Tennessee and Kentucky clashed in snow-covered Knoxville 75 years ago. When it was over, Shields-Watkins Field might have more resembled the frozen battlefields in the Korean peninsula than it did a gridiron. STORY open.substack.com/pub/neylandpre…
JACKSON, Miss — Facing third-and-8 and a one-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Jeff Francis put Tennessee in front of Ole Miss with a touchdown pass to Joey Clinkscales in 1986. The Vols won, 22-10, knocking the Rebels out of Sugar Bowl contention.
