Daily News Union
@NYDNUnion
The unionized reporters and staff of New York's hometown newspaper, est. 2021 — also at @nydnunion.bsky.social
We are the Daily News Union. Together, we are standing up for the people of our paper and the people of New York.
Here we go again, Alden gutting a newsroom and throwing phenomenal reporters out on the street, denigrating the public service that is at the heart of journalism.
Today, @chicagotribune laid off five guild staff members in a roughly 10% cut to our newsroom. These layoffs underscore a sad but unsurprising failure of leadership by Alden Global Capital, our hedge fund owner, and local management.
Why is this happening? There’s only one answer: greed. We haven’t gotten meaningful answers on why cuts must be made. This week, our hedge fund owner, Alden Global Capital, put in a $88 million bid to buy another newspaper. They just don’t care about this critical work.

This is laughable. Changing our newspaper's century-old slogan after it becomes the @NYDNUnion's rallying cry? I mean, c'mon.
Hey @andrewjulien, how do you expect to make good on this promise when we don’t have a politics OR metro editor and no beat reporters to cover Albany, housing, immigration or the White House?
We’re still trying to negotiate our first contract, but @EverettHerald management isn’t playing ball. ⚾️⚾️ We handed out flyers at last night’s @EverettAquaSox game, asking folks to support our fight for a living wage and fair working conditions.
Heath Freeman and Alden Global Capital have money to invest. They "invest" it in lawyers bent on destroying our (virtual) newsroom, extracting cash ("profit") rather than fostering prosperity (ROI). Time to pony up, finance bros. We deserve living wages!
Heath Freeman and his private equity goons are trying to buy yet another paper — with money we've been demanding go towards LIVING WAGES for the employees they already have. This was the point of our rally last week: the money for a fair contract is there.
Let Heath Freeman and Alden Global Capital know that the @NYDailyNews journalists need (and deserve) a fair contract to protect local news in NYC. Sign the petition and show your support for the @NYDNUnion actionnetwork.org/petitions/stan…
ICYMI: It took @NYDailyNews management less than a day and half to “write” their op-ed blasting us but took more than three days for them to do anything concrete to address Mayor Adams’ blocking @C_Sommerfeldt from pressers. Management’s priority: union-busting, not a free press.
WE FIXED IT: Obviously our successful rally had an effect on @NYDailyNews management, who felt compelled to “write” an op-ed. Unfortunately it’s full of mischaracterizations and missing key facts. As journalists we couldn’t let that slide, so we got out our red pens…
"Even understaffed, under-resourced and without a physical newsroom (Alden got rid of it in 2021), the Daily News routinely breaks crucial local news stories and provides the old-school in-depth local coverage the city has relied on for over a century" nygroove.nyc/nydn-union-dri…
The News's own AI suggested it, so how could we not?
