🧵21 things I wish someone would’ve told me as a new Assistant Professor: 1. It’ll take forever to get started and your lab setup. Take however long you’re hoping and double it. Maybe triple it. 2. Seek out new mentors and collaborators. They don’t need to be in your department.
Congrats to David A. Sherman, et al, for the #APSselect paper "Quadriceps motor unit properties following ACL reconstruction are associated with corticospinal excitability and motor cortex activations" in @japplphysiol ow.ly/tqHx50VNKpt @DaveShermanPT @NUPTMRS @NUBouve
Honored to be recognized with my @ucfchps coauthors @Jpbeausejour_ @MoeinKoohestani @Grant_Norte @MattStockPhD.

A really neat project examining the influence of oral contraceptives on immobilization-induced weakness and recovery.

Great job by my mentee, Kevan Knowles, on a successful M.S. thesis defense today. Kevan conducted a 6 wk RCT to examine the impact of training volume on multiple measures of muscle quality among older adults. Manuscript will be submitted shortly!

Interesting new data by Kazemi et al. “…neural mechanisms are heavily involved in the regulation of composite grip strength, and that the relative contribution of neural and muscular mechanisms of handgrip strength are state dependent in older adults.”pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40576458/
Congratulations to our Neurologic, Women's Health, and Sports residents for a successful 1st Annual UCF-OrlandoHealth Residency Research Symposium!👏

New preprint: RT-induced appendicular lean mass changes are unrelated to pre-training bone characteristics in untrained adults. Great job by Dakota Tiede, @DanielPlotkin_ and others & collab from @PaulSwinton9 and @BradSchoenfeld biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Now @ACSMNews poster 229 - Kevan Knowles has data on the acute effects of deadlifting among those with low back pain.

Great week at @ACSMNews so far. We presented new data showing oral contraceptives do not influence disuse or rehabilitation outcomes. If you’re in Atlanta I’d love to connect ✌️

Matthew did a great job as Interim Dean. Excited to follow his lead. @ucfchps is in good hands!
The new dean of the College of Health Professions and Sciences, Matthew Theriot, will tell you what he’s most proud of professionally is not so much what he’s done, but how he’s collaborated with others to translate ideas into action. healthprofessions.ucf.edu/news/building-…

Lastly, this was a major, major group effort. Couldn't have done this without a stellar lab group and supportive collaborators, especially our friendly Canadians 🇨🇦 @MattStockPhD @jpfarthing @RobJMacLennan @andrushko 🧵🛑
The longest, most arduous, yet most rewarding studies I’ve been part of is finally published in @PhysRep Cross-education attenuates muscle weakness and facilitates strength recovery after orthopedic immobilization in females: a pilot study 🧵1/
Check this out. Interesting research by one of our Athletic Training Faculty. :) @ucf_mat @UCF_IEPRS ucf.edu/news/can-ai-pr…
