Good morning New York, while you were sleeping this was our most read story. on.ft.com/453Cetv
"alchemy has been pursued by civilisations as far back as ancient Egypt... Now Marathon Fusion, a start-up focused on using nuclear fusion to generate power, has said the same process could be used to produce gold" Great writeup from the @FT! Read more: ft.com/content/06f91e…
Today's free issue of The Diff: The Finance of Alchemy. A fusion startup may have a way to turn mercury into gold. But if you can make a lot of something that's priced because it's scarce, how much is that worth?
People who argue fusion energy won't be cost competitive against fission don't realize that a 1GW fusion reactor can produce 2 tons of gold per year by transmuting mercury. This means Fusion Energy has a 50:50 revenue split between electricity and alchemy.
Congrats to the team at @MarathonFusion for identifying a plausible, scalable process for transmuting mercury into gold. This is something that drove Isaac Newton insane.
