Mrs. MCC and I will finish The Free Spirit section! There was so much to discuss in aphorism 36 last time that we reduced the scope. Since the last space didn't record, we'll do a brief recap of aph 36 and say a bit about Part 2 from a birds-eye view. x.com/i/spaces/1MYxN…
The great scholar of ancient philosophy, John Burnet, on the indisputable notion of physis for the early philosophers: "So far as I know, no historian of Greek philosophy has clearly laid it down that the word used by the early cosmologists to express this idea of a permanent…
strongly recommended!
Next weekend, I'll offer the first installment in a series on Plato's Euthyphro, beginning with Strauss's interpretation of it. Strauss's lecture shows how carefully we ought to read Plato and articulates the tension between reason and revelation. x.com/i/spaces/1BdxY…
I do so love responses like this—it shows the laziness out of which ignorance spews its folly. The @LyceumInstitute offers courses in the Trivium, Latin, Greek, philosophy seminars, has an enormous archive of resources, offers symposia in the arts, colloquia, & much more. 🧵👇
Brian wants to be the next Jordan Peterson, alas, that’s not gonna work. He’s trying to sell sth but he isn’t explaining what he’s even selling. Academia disappointed him with their standards, ok. So what is he offering instead? Lower standards?
One difficulty that the internet creates in our disposition towards learning is that you get the sense that somehow everything has already been discovered, thought, experienced and shared. It makes it more difficult to experience wonder. An example: when I was a teenager, my…
It’s 2025. Have you read up on your Plato yet?

C.S. Lewis, Aldous Huxley, and John F. Kennedy all died on November 22nd, 1963. What does this mean?
I will advertise this in proportion to the amount of time I spent writing it (a lot!). Strauss is by no means the final word on Plato, but he is an extraordinary first word.

I enjoy listening to what "edgy" people have to say, but only if they care about the truth. The guy below is completely retarded and hasn't read a single word of Strauss or Maimonides. You can't just "JQ" Strauss away. His soul was set in motion and animated by the love of…
My life is a lesson in humiliation. I'm 39. Unmarried. Childless. No salary. No home. No car. No retirement. Very little savings. I live by the charity of others—freelance consulting, book royalties, the good will of those who believe in me. I hold a PhD in philosophy. But…
I have a new article out with @Babygravy9 's @mansworldmag_ today on SSRIs and democracies. I use Tocqueville to demonstrate the spiritual nature of the democratic soul, then turn to SSRIs as a democratizing force. Thread of quotes from the article. Link at the end. 1/9
Do we want to credential and respect the type of man who chooses this route? Education the chance to participate in the study of the arts was always a luxury or a personal endeavour. If the knowledge is of value in and of itself then let those who would cheat pay for a value…

Regarding Greek culture, Jaeger writes "The reason for its survival as a whole was the fact that it possessed Plato; had it not been for him, the rest of Hellenic culture might have died along with the old Olympian gods" (p. 44).
Pound for pound, talk shows are cheap to produce. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert reportedly has an annual budget of $100 mil--which includes Colbert's salary. The produce about 150 shows a year. Without commercial breaks each show is about 40 minutes. But if you take…

Woof! Just finished writing a commentary on Strauss's interpretation of the Euthyphro. What started as taking a few notes turned into a much bigger project. I want to share it with you in space early next week as a prelude to a close reading of the Euthyphro itself.
Below, I offer two crude sketches, one of the classical Greek view of the artist and one of the Romantic view of the artist, which has great influence on us today. This arose out of a great discussion with @lacancerous and he will soon write a follow up on the modern artist.
