We love a presentation with interactive maps! Thank you so much to Libby - joining us from @Northeastern and the Mapping Black London project!
An intriguing talk by Libby Collard, looking at forgotten black people in London during the 18th century. Struggles over identifying black people and even what black means were discussed, and the way her work was delving into parish records, and using new ways of maps.
Our July meeting, with guest speaker and Tudor legend Kate McCaffrey, is in three days! Keep your meeting link handy (or drop us an email/DM) for 6pm BST on Monday, as this is one you won’t want to miss! We’re so excited for this meeting and we can’t wait to see you there!
We could not be more excited to share this month’s MEMRN guest lecture with you! This month we’re welcoming friend of the network and all-round Tudor crowd-pleaser, the utterly brilliant Kate McCaffrey, to speak on her research into Tudor Books of Hours!
Our June meeting is tonight and you won’t want to miss either of our two brilliant speakers! Join us at 6pm BST via Teams as our friendly community of listeners hears all about their work. Make sure you’ve got your meeting link handy, or drop us an email or DM to attend.

Typo or no typo, we still can’t wait for our June meeting next week, where we’ve got two fantastic speakers lined up! Make sure to come along on Monday 30th June at 6pm BST and join our friendly community of listeners! Drop us a DM or an email for the meeting link
🚨Typo alert!🚨 Auriel Tiltman’s upcoming presentation is titled “Conversation with a Student Conservator”, not “Conservation with a Student Conservator”. Don’t panic, it’s still about conservation, we just want to talk about it!
Have you missed any of our monthly meetings? Did you know you can catch up with all of them with the recordings on our website? Check out this great one from guest speaker @NicholasMorto11 about surviving a Mongol Invasion: memrnchase.wordpress.com/2025/03/13/gue…

Elizabeth joined us to speak on how more joined up thinking, considering different national actors in parallel, can enhance our understanding of North Atlantic empire in the 17th century. Thank you Elizabeth!
Elizabeth Hines gave a fascinating picture of how the Dutch Estates General organised the signing of the Treaty of Hartford around imperial policy, the loss of Brazil, and the capture of New Sweden.
For the second presentation in our Portuguese double-bill, we had Daniela Fernandes Santos sharing her research on the system of printing privileges in early modern Portugal! For more info on all of our speakers today, head to our website!
Daniela Fernandes Santos came next, explaining the development of printing privileges in Portugal, considering the way merchants took advantage of and expanded the system, and how it could be worked around by printers.
Thank you to Rui who joined us from Portugal to speak on the perpetuation of memory in the manuscripts of the Cathedral of Viseu, Portugal.
Next was Rui Pedro Neves, @RuiPedroNe96374, looking at the use of obituaries in Portugal and what they said about Portuguese Christianity.
