Some personal news, as the cool kids say: so so SO excited to share that today is my first day at @TheAthletic. I’m joining the A team as a senior writer covering college hoops.
Of course there is no way to define fair market value in collective world because there is no market for this kind of activity other than in college sports. Cool!
If you’re keeping track, the “hard cap” era of rev share/NIL lasted 22 days. Now the collectives can provide “soft cap” above the 20.5M as long as they have enough cover in their deals to meet “fair market value.” (Ie $5,000 for a transaction instead of $50,000)
Dan Lanning brags that the Ducks have put on "over 1,300 pounds this offseason." Hold my beer, says the room of sports writers.

Jeffrey Epstein files make appearance in college-sports hearing. Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Tex., offers amendment that would keep bill from going forward unless President releases files related to Jeffrey Epstein that he says involves correspondence between Epstein and Larry Nassar.

Venus Williams after becoming the oldest WTA match winner since 2004: “I had to come back for the insurance, because they informed me this year that I’m on cobra. So it’s like, I got to get my benefits on” 😭😭😭😭
From @TheAthletic: Venus Williams at 45 became the oldest player to win a WTA Tour singles match in 20 years. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion had not played a WTA Tour match since March 2024. nyti.ms/44ZuZTl

Fans and media have voiced their displeasure with the idea of March Madness expansion. But what do college basketball coaches think? The Athletic surveyed 35 of them for their thoughts — and the results were split.
Took the NBA 40 years to turn a profit. The NFL wasn’t profitable until 41 years after its founding. MLS is 29 & counting without being profitable. 🤷🏻♀️
No other sports league lost money for 25 years. The players can and should strike if they feel that is in their best interest.
With NCAA Tournament expansion talk swirling, what do coaches *actually* want to see from March Madness? After surveying about 10% of D-1, the results are in... and offer little clarity. Story for @TheAthleticCBB with @Lindsay_Schnell and @CJMooreHoops: nytimes.com/athletic/65074…

If the cap was actually being enforced - big if - I think it would make college sports more interesting. Forces tough choices and risks. You get to see what schools really value and who the smart people are.
I think everyone gets why Kentucky would be the one to do something like this, but ... it's absolutely one hell of a risk. Surely the ratio isn't quite that radical.

Jim Phillips on NIL, the CSC: We can’t help ourselves sometimes. People know what the rules are relative to $20.5. They know what legitimate NIL is. You can play in that gray area if you want, but all that does is undermine the new structure.
“We got back in the car (after signing the contract), I got to a red light & my daughter goes, ‘Wait, we don’t have to get on the airplane to Milwaukee no more? You’re gonna be in your house? In Portland? The whole time?'” It’s true. Dame’s home: nytimes.com/athletic/65077…
