Journalist focused on prisons & harsh sentencing. More fun than I sound.
Ayman al-Jadi, one of the five journalists murdered by Israel yesterday, while they were sleeping in a clearly-marked press van, was killed as his wife was about to gave birth to their first child. These men were all clearly targeted & yet journalists around the world don't care.
Journalist Ayman Al-Jiddi was on his way to Al-Awda Hospital, anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child. He had recently married amidst this devastating genocide and was filled with hope to welcome his newborn tonight. Tragically, Israel took his life just hours before he…
🚨 SCOOP 🚨 Oklahoma AG Gentner Drummond made a deal in 2023 to release Richard Glossip. (So why does he insist on retrying him for 1st degree murder?) Read more: @theintercept w/ @chronic_jordan theintercept.com/2025/07/16/ric…
Florida prosecutors say Michelle Taylor used gasoline to set a fire that killed her son. Top forensic chemists say they’re wrong. interc.pt/429Hhad
Often, problematic prosecutions come to light only after a person has already been convicted, when it's much harder to right a wrong. Here, there's still time for the state to reconsider its case. Read @LilianaSegura's urgent, enraging reporting here: theintercept.com/2025/03/31/flo…
New from me @theintercept: A FL woman faces life in prison for killing her son in a fire. But the fire marshal's lab has a history of misidentifying gasoline in fire debris & experts say that's what happened here. A new twist on an all-too familiar story. x.com/theintercept/s…
“The lab report that says they found gasoline is bullshit. Every part of the state’s case rests on that.” interc.pt/4jfiA3m
The “worst of the worst” are now mostly free. Of 779 men who endured American freedom and justice (torture and imprisonment without charge or trial) over 24 yrs, 15 remain. Kidnap, torture, and illegal imprisonment are among the worst state crimes. Now do a self-assessment.
Flights to Guantanamo Bay have begun. The worst of the worst have no place in our homeland.
A month into the new year, world is on fire, fascism rising, and yet my reflex to check this app is increasingly nonexistent. I do check Bluesky roughly 10000 times a day, however. (Join if you haven’t! And come say hello, same handle.)
The mass exodus from Twitter feels very real. I've gotten a steady stream of new followers at Bluesky despite a mostly dormant account. In the interest of preserving my sanity I've mostly stopped posting anywhere but if and when I do restart it will likely be there.
If there’s anything I’m holding onto, it’s that there won’t be a second Trump execution spree. But for many in Terre Haute, the initial relief has given way to anxiety about the future. My latest @theintercept theintercept.com/2025/01/18/bid…
Re: Zuckerberg's announcement: Censorship of Palestinians & pro-Palestine voices has been pervasive across Meta's platforms. A lot of people who claim to be pro-free speech go very quiet when it's those voices being quashed or they want that kind of speech suppressed.
As we leave 2024 behind, I need to thank every last person who sent condolences after we lost Wally, my loyal companion of 15 years. I miss him every day. But your messages (and dog pics) helped a lot. So thank you. Carrying that kindness into 2025. 🐾x.com/radleybalko/st…
We say goodbye to this handsome gentleman today. My wife @LilianaSegura adopted Wally 15 years ago. I don't know that any dog and human could be more perfectly suited for one another. Wally was nearly feral when Liliana got him. She spent the next several years . . .
GAZA: 5 Palestinian journalists were killed when an Israeli air strike targeted their press van. The journalists worked and slept in this vehicle, thinking they would be safe. More than 200 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israeli attacks.
Merry Christmas, here’s my piece about Biden’s death row commutations, which brought joy and relief to the condemned, their lawyers, and their families.
