PhD researcher, looking at the climate
Seems very unlikely! See my poster at the @LondMathSoc Metastability & Tipping workshop in Leicester next week to find out more.
This is a good point. If ECS>10K the climate-carbon cycle system would be in an unstable regime, and we would never have had a stable preindustrial climate, right @Lambda_Joe?
Yesterday the first paper from my PhD, 'Tipping Mechanisms in a conceptual model of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation' was published online, and can be read here: doi.org/10.1002/wea.76… @SachaSinet @PDLRitchie @ExeterUniMaths @UofE_Research @RMetS
New paper from my PhD is out on seasonal forecasting of the European North-West shelf seas! 🌡 🌀 🌊 link.springer.com/article/10.100…

There’s no world where ECS is 10 degrees, and recent aerosol reductions have little to do with that.

Here, again, is my attempt in the @LRB to outline the nature and scale of the damage inflicted on the UK by the Conservative Party over its 14 years in power. Don’t ever forget it. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/…
Here is a lovely geometric proof that sqrt(2) is irrational. The proof begins by looking at an isosceles right triangle whose legs have length 1. By the Pythagorean theorem, this triangle's hypotenuse will have length sqrt(2).
Today I learned a new and beautifully-simple proof that sqrt(2) is irrational and I feel the same giddy excitement as when I was a student. I can’t believe this is my job.
Heavy private vehicles should be banned. You should require an additional, professional licence to drive anything heavier than 2t.

On many parts of the land surface, the hottest days are warming faster than the annual mean, according to a new paper by Chris Huntingford, @Lambda_Joe, @PDLRitchie et al. (@UKCEHPapers @GSI_Exeter @ExeterUniMaths ). Full paper available at: rdcu.be/dDIsn
Why does plant respiration decay overnight? @simonrobjones provides an answer in this elegant modelling paper, with Dan Bruhn, Lina Mercado, @NinaRaoult @ExeterUniMaths @GSI_Exeter doi.org/10.1038/s43247…
Our new emergent constraint paper is now out in @NatureComms! This one reduces uncertainty in arguably the most policy-relevant numbers to come from climate science: the global carbon budgets consistent with the Paris targets. @GSI_Exeter @exeter link.springer.com/10.1038/s41467…

Some people still think heated tobacco and cigarettes have the same risk. This is wrong. False information confuses current smokers who are looking for better alternatives. Learn more notacigarette.co.uk #NotACigarette #NotASmoker
Approaching 1.5°C: how will we know we’ve reached this crucial warming mark? The Paris Agreement does not define "temperature rise", so recognition of 1.5°C being reached may be delayed In @nature we propose the Current Global Warming Level metric nature.com/articles/d4158…
Having a great time at the #CBQuiz. Looking forward to getting a question right eventually.

New paper on ozone damage to sugarcane!!🌱 sciencedirect.com/science/articl… We combine field measurements and spatial modelling to show that ozone poses a substantial risk to sugarcane production in Brazil.
