Teach those babies to read. Trained in #BalancedLit but devoted to #SoR & #EvidenceBasedPractices. Have integrity. Be passionate. Refuse to give up. Persevere.
Explicitly teaching handwriting is so important in the early years. Want some support in making that happen? Check out this free resource to help with sounds, explicit verbal pathways of each letter and printing practice. onlit.org/resource/print… (Links to articles to follow.)
Our job is to teach the students we have. Not the ones we would like to have. Not the ones we used to have. Those we have right now. All of them. #education #teachers
I have kids that have a genetic predisposition to dyslexia and they were subjected to F&P when we lived in Chicago. It’s a curriculum that causes lasting damage, because the neural pathways are there (but wrong). So much harder to remediate than a child who hasn’t been exposed to…
I believe it!!! Do you have the link to the entire article?
Seems like instructional coaching matters.
As @lelouchdaily put it: "The struggle wasn't because I wasn't capable, but rather, I was simply missing a shit-ton of prerequisite knowledge. It's like trying to defeat a[n] Elden Ring boss... at level 1. It's like walking into a movie halfway through-you can't understand the…
🎯 "To begin thinking at higher levels, we must first stop thinking about lower levels. ... Students who lack automated number sense struggle with algebra not because they can't understand abstract thinking, but because their working memory is consumed by basic arithmetic that…
Expertise isn't about having more working memory, it's about needing less of it. Experts automate many components in long-term memory and can recognise meaningful patterns instantly, bypassing the need to process individual elements. ⬇️ 🧵
I’ve noticed a much needed shift in information coming from @POPEYBC. However, when I look at their assessments resource page I notice it is out of alignment. Will this be changing too? Asessments: Provincial Outreach Program for the Early Years popey.ca/resources/asse…
I am at that point where I seek out substance. I’m tired of “all flash, no substance” folks. We don’t need more cheerleaders in education we need leaders, knowledgeable leaders.
I don’t mind the inspiration but oftentimes there is no substance behind it. Teachers and leaders walk away without anything actionable to improve teaching and learning. Many of these conferences distract us from our purpose- instruction.
And you will be changing their circumstance because by teaching them to read you will open up the world to them, their family and their community!
Imagine if Chick-fil-A lowered their standards based on the neighborhood, they’d never do it. So why do we calibrate expectations based on the “type” of students we serve? Excellence should be non-negotiable.
You may not know this, but Sold a Story would not have happened if not for public media. I've worked in public media my entire career. It's foundational to my professional - and personal - life. I'm deeply concerned about the future of the industry. americanpublicmedia.org/support
I always enjoy when others begin to question the “edu-babble” they hear parroted from above!
My advice to trainee teachers has always been to play along, pander to their lecturers’ egos and just get through the time of tribulation as unscathed as possible. However, it appears more and more are challenging dimwitted tasks and activities they have been set and I do admire…
Argh… beanie babies strategies. Those posters were in so many classrooms. 🤦🏼♀️
If kids can't decode, how are they supposed to read this classroom "decoding strategies" poster? h/t: @laurapatranella
The other point—which I got from @DTWillingham’s latest book, and which blows students’ minds—is that how much you want to learn something has no impact on whether you learn it; what matters is the mental work that you do.
The amount of dogma and edu-babble parroted by others is astounding! I remember the looks I got when I said “learning styles” was a myth, or the evidence for BTC isn’t there. #EvidenceMatters
A well-written and clearly argued piece articulating the perils of hitching a discipline’s wagon to ideology rather than steadily accumulated empirical evidence. While knowledge has advanced in education, implementation has lagged behind and continues to be highly variable.

Way to go @POPEYBC! I’ve noticed quite the shift in practices being promoted by your organization. Thanks for learning. Thanks for shifting. It’ll have an impact on countless teachers and children. Well done. 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Learning (or not learning) affects our emotions and self-concept, even if we are not consciously aware of it. This blog “Success, Failure & Self-Concept” explains more wp.me/p4hKgx-2F (4 min read)
