Excited to welcome Dr. Monica Cartelle Gestal next week for a seminar on Bordetella infection and the key role of eosinophils! Thanks to Dr. Eva Bengten, Director of the Center for Immunology and Microbial Research @UMMCnews and Department of CMB for organizing this great event!

A memory popped up today from my farewell lunch with one of my most influential mentors, Dr. June Scott (Emory). She truly taught me the value of focus—and helped shape me into a well-funded NIH investigator. Her guidance has had a lasting impact on how I approach science!

Endless thanks to our incredible research team—from mentorship to groundbreaking discoveries. Today, MSRP fellow Daniel Kerr under the guidance of Dr. Kenichi Takeshita, @UMMCnews, presented exciting summer data identifying a novel, targetable pathway to reduce Spn colonization.

This afternoon’s conversation was a delightful exploration of microbial pathogenesis (Vidal), experimental biophysics (Warncke/Emory) and the intricacies of mitochondrial (Hosler/UMMC) cell biology!

Today, NSF announced an add’l 500 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program awardees for the 2025-2026 cohort, bringing the total to approx 1,500. #NSFGRFP supports grad students as they pursue their dreams, build STEM skills, & become the next generation of innovators & leaders.
We revised and resubmitted studies (link below) that provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the encapsulation of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the lung. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
👉We are hiring! If you are a young scientist working on Physiology or Neuroscience, broadly defined, and wish to research & teach with academic freedom, an annual budget, technical support and state-sponsored student fellowships, apply @cinvestav Mexico. fisio.cinvestav.mx/documents/Even…
Wonderful kickoff to the MSRP and SURE programs at @UMMCnews and @GradSchoolUMMC. We appreciate the support of the next generation of scientists and physicians. A warm welcome to Daniel Kerr (UMMC, MSRP fellow) and Ella Bennett (Harvard, SURE fellow) as they join the Vidal Lab!

Three of our “five” summer trainees are already presenting their progress! They’ve learned how to make mutations, perform PCR screening, and carry out phenotypic characterization, all in just a few weeks! They will be applying to graduate school (2) and medical specialty (1).

Aún tiene chance de obtener la inscripción a bajo precio! Aprovechen! se reciben resúmenes hasta el 20 de junio!! @ibt_unam @biomedicasunam @ccg_unam @BUAPoficial @IPNENCB @IPN_MX
Thrilled to join this year’s Griffith’s Legacy Conference and represent the vibrant research community of the South Central USA! Huge thanks to organizers @LuHiller Luisa Hiller and Calum Johnston for putting together such an outstanding meeting
