Young RNA biologist and others: The deadline for these attractive group leader positions is this weekend!
Here is the direct link: helmholtz-hiri.de/en/
Apply now, spread the word: three (3) fully funded Helmholtz research groups (assistant prof level) with attractive packages. Topics: RNA-based medicine, microbial RNA, and RNA-based infection research incl. RNA technologies. Great environment for young people. Come and join us.

This is an important step in unraveling the path of antisense antibiotics (asobiotics) across the complex envelope of gram- bacteria and on to finding their mRNA targets. I hope Adam and Marco have enough energy left to expand this to many more species, including gram+ 😉
Excited to share something from my previous postdoc with @mgalactus, a collaboration with the @JoergLab using lab evolution to see how different bacterial species develop resistance to programmable antibiotics: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Young Lab, great mentor—go and apply!
I am excited to announce several post-doc positions studying gene regulation and cell biology of spirochetes are available in the @NIH Biology of Spirochetes Unit, opening 2025 in Bethesda, MD @NIAIDNews! Join our team and work on the dynamic NIH campus: training.nih.gov/jobs/pdfi-0128…
Gathering in the French senate to discuss the great potential of extracellular RNA. It’d be most interested to use it to find RNA transporters for organ-specific delivery in RNA medicine. Big thanks to Amy Buck and others for organizing this.

RNA world of Prevotella, now Segatella, gut bacteria unfolding! Includes an sRNA essential for colonization. Great work from the @StrowigLab. I am proud to say that three of my former students and postdocs (El Mouali, Tawk, Ponath) contributed to it. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The Gunter Meister lab on social media—you don’t want to miss this!
“Glad Kanelbullens Dag!” Today we celebrated Cinnamon Bun Day @MeisterLab
Looks like worth browsing!
Our focus issue on RNA biology features reviews that explore the many faces of #RNA, diving into the processes mediating the lifecycle of RNA, the regulatory roles of RNA, the importance of RNA in disease, and the technologies used to study RNA. cell.com/molecular-cell…
Shall we start calling them „asobiotics“? Probably easier than „antisense-based antibiotics“ or „antibacterial peptide-delivered antisense drugs“, to name just a few of the current names. To be discussed. Anyway, ASOBIOTICS 2024 was a big success. Big thanks to everyone involved.

Never miss the conference dinner! This is the one of ASOBIOTICS 2024, a 2-day workshop in Würzburg open to everyone sharing an interest in antisense based antibiotics to kill or modulate microbes. Great science today. A field with great potential! helmholtz-hiri.de/en/asobiotics2…

Thanks for doing this, it’s so important we give young academics enough time to grow and find their own topic.

We have recently introduced ASO-based silencing of phage and host genes. Take a look at this short animation by @Milan_Gerovac to see how it works!
Excited to share our preprint @JoergLab 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗡𝗔 𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲-𝗵𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 doi.org/10.1101/2024.0… @Uni_WUE @Helmholtz_HIRI @SPP2330 #biotech #microbio #phage
I am glad I can finally share this: Non-genetic mRNA silencing reveals essential genes in phage-host interplay. Enabled discovery of new important genes of Pseudomonas jumbo phage phiKZ. Also works for defense systems, clinical isolates. Read here: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

ASO technology using exogenous delivery of antisense oligonucleotides offers many diverse applications, from killing pathogens to reprogramming genetically intractable microbes. Time to organize the first conference on ASOs & microbes! Register at helmholtz-hiri.de

I’m late to the phage tail party, still want to congratulate @Jens_Hoer on a great postdoc in the @SorekLab. Figured out function of an ISG15-like protein in phage defence. nature.com/articles/s4158… Jens is looking for students/postdocs for his own lab, see helmholtz-HIRI.de

It was a pleasure to host our summer party at my Würzburg canoe club last week. I’d been promising this for years. Great place, come and visit, we’ll take you out on the water. Wonder who is the GFP tagged guy in the canoe to the right? It’s me!
This year, the joint summer party of the #HIRI & the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology was a sporty affair. In addition to enjoying cool drinks & grilled food (a big thank you to all contributors), participants had the opportunity to try kayaking & stand-up paddling. 🏄🚣
