‼️Extra cost of being disabled in UK to rise by almost 12% in five years ‼️ The new @scope Disability Price Tag published today Cuts to PIP will leave disabled people with no financial support to live independently theguardian.com/politics/2025/…
The House of Lords will debate the Universal Credit Bill later this afternoon. Serious questions remain unanswered. We’ve joined 12 other leading anti-poverty and disability charities to set out our remaining concerns about the bill. ucpipbill.co.uk
“When the political and media class wish to leave disabled people hungry and dirty, the disabled community must explain why we should be allowed to eat and be clean.” Today’s col. reflects on a tough month and what it all means for disability in the U.K. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
We seem to be entering a dark period. Disabled people always faced prejudice, but it's so dangerous when public figures fuel it, amp up suspicion & the idea disabled people are either faking or burdens. Compassion & justice are our core values, we need to stay true to them. 1/2
🚨 Yesterday, the government pushed through the Universal Credit (UC) Bill. And disabled people will pay the price. Here's what you need to know 🧵
It seems completely reasonable to me that someone who has been assessed by DWP as unable to work due to disabilities/poor health & as facing significant health/disability related extra costs should be supported by the government to around the level of a minimum wage salary 1/2
🚨 We’re shocked and disappointed. The UK government has pushed through HUGE cuts to Universal Credit for disabled people applying in the future. These cuts will be devastating. They risk pushing even more disabled people to food banks.
🚨MPs will vote again today on the Universal Credit (UC) Bill, which proposes devastating cuts to UC. MPs email inboxes have been filled by campaigners. And it's been working. But we can't stop now. We still have the power to influence their votes.
Ministers have said the requirement for a descriptor to apply 'constantly' forms part of the way the severe conditions criteria is currently applied in the WCA. There are currently four requirements and 'constantly' doesn't appear within them. 👇
Universal Credit and (no longer!) PIP Bill goes to a final vote today. Here's our joint briefing with 20 other organisations setting out final analysis of the Bill & priorities for further amendments: ucpipbill.co.uk
❗ Today, MPs will vote on whether to make record cuts to disabled people's social security. The scale of the remaining cuts will be devastating and risk pushing more disabled people to food banks. MPs must vote NO to disability cuts.
Vote against the cuts today!
Actually around 50,000 people will be pulled into poverty by remaining cuts in Bill – this now our best estimate based on Govt’s impact assessments. @jrf_uk previously showed how DWP sleight of hand underplayed true poverty impact – same applies to this latest publication. 🧵1/3
As well as analysis from @NEF and @jrf_uk - important to see the policy experts at the House of Commons library draw attention to the fact that the poverty assessments for the UC & PIP Bill, bizarrely include the impact of not making the previous government's cuts. 👇

Welfare bill u-turn in face of mounting Labour rebellion over disability benefits cuts means that 50,000 people will now be lifted out of poverty, updated impact assessment finds. Initial version of bill would have pushed additional 250,000 into poverty. Full story 👇🏼…
This 👇 Plus who gains? Our analysis of UC 'rebalancing' (big cuts for disabled ppl, small boost for everyone): For disabled households, average impact pushes many thousands into severe hardship w/ ppl are at risk of needing a food bank Only ppl in non-disabled h'holds gain
This is nonsense. The impact assessment starts from an imaginary baseline incorporating reforms planned but never implemented by the previous government In the real world, the cuts remaining in the Bill will push around 50,000 disabled people into poverty theguardian.com/society/2025/j…

For anyone campaigning on the UC & PIP Bill (or just trying to work out what's happening with it), I've pulled together a quick visualisation of the amendments which MPs *might* have a chance to vote on this Wednesday. public.flourish.studio/visualisation/…
We applaud the power of disabled people, food banks and MPs, like Dr Marie Tidball, who have tirelessly used their voices to stand up for disabled people. 💚 Ahead of the final vote next week, we're encouraging MPs to ensure disabled people are protected from severe hardship.
Well…this whole thing could have been avoided if Government consulted properly in the first place. Months of uncertainty and proposals that will make people poorer, only for government to pull and say they will consult. A huge cut to UC health remains so still work to do

Labour MP Mary Kelly Foy now speaking in the Commons on welfare bill. "I popped out for a banana earlier on, and when I came back in things had changed again, so I'm more unclear on what I'm voting on" 🍌
